Well, going to take it on myself. Clutch will be here friday, going to have the garage all clean (well workable anyway) and get a hand with the heavy lifting when I need it. Machine shop wants 65 to clean up the flywheel.

Allmotorrexx, your write up is fantastic. If anyone has any tips or tricks I'm all ears.

    Thanks everyone.

Can't do it... not enough room in my garage and not enough space under to work on it. F-ing 5lug.

Spent 6 hours and have yet to get the trans off. I don't have the time to deal with it. Have an interview on monday and after figuring the cost of spending days under there or taking it to a diy garage about 30 miles from here, plus the cost of the machine shop, plus new fluid and a new trolly jack (my floor jack won't reach under that far) I would save maybe $100.

I hate losing. And I hate losing my money saved for a lift, or for a new motorcycle. Every time I have savings...
Hope the interview goes well, as that will be my focus this weekend. That would more than double my income. Maybe then I could add 4 more lugs

Got the truck home and learned a few things.

    1) clutch was so gone that it wore a grove in the pressure plate
    2) the throw out bearing was way past it and was heat damaged
    3) flywheel had to be machined and had lots of hot spots.
    4) the clutch pedal is feather light.... what the hell, it has been the heaviest clutch I had ever driven. Mechanic had a taco as well (knew his stuff about tacos, former toyota mechanic) and he guessed my clutch was about gone 30k ago and that the whole clutch and pressure plate were barely disengaging the whole time I have owned this truck. Not sure why, but thought that the new one would be good for about 100k or more. Gave me a 3 year warrenty on everything even though I brought the parts in.

Your clutch was already gone at 70K?

Now I am worried. I just got past 75K...

Apparently my clutch was toast at 40k or sooner. Is you clutch pedal very heavy?

I know that many 2.7 truck got a crap clutch at the factory and I'm thinking the person who owned the truck before me might have been really hard on it. Also my throw out was about falling apart and everything showed lots of heat damage like the clutch was dragging alot.

So if the pedal gets really heavy, even if there is no slipping, have the clutch looked at.

OP, glad this got sorted out in a relatively inexpensive way. Sorry to hear about the early clutch failure.

LOL @ auto comment! I'm sure an auto trans has never failed in the history of the automotive industry:rolleyes:

Heh, manual transmission here didn't fail at all. Just the clutch.

Yeah, because its so much more fun to spend $5k on a transmission than a few hundred on a clutch.... not to mention towing it when it goes boom, rather than the gradual failure.

I think they're right under the 'my clutch went out @ 70k' threads.

but of the two used in 2nd gens..... not so much... probably not even a 10th of the issues of what you see in the manual trans world as far as TOB clutches, shitty shifting etc.

That stated. the 5 speed manual found on the I4 is a damn good trans, if i had an I4 5 lugger.... it would have a manual trans.

I can't imagine having both a 5lug and an auto, no offense to anyone who does. But with out the 5 speed I would have never bought this truck.

My wife has a yaris sedan with an auto and its like driving an appliance. I think a 5lug auto tacoma would be the same way.
