hey guys, I have a 15' Tacoma 4x4 with a 2.7L. It has a 3in lift with 285/70/17 tires and I am averaging 14mpg... Anyone else getting the same? I feel like I should be getting way better gas mileage

    Lol. Why?

You took an economical engine and lugged it down with big heavy tires and a lift that ruined your aero dynamics.

And you probably drive too fast on the freeway and accelerate too fast around town.

But I bet you say you don't do either.

    I get 17-19 with P265/75/16s and a sub 3" lift.
Sometimes less if I drive hard.

    Never much more.

When I was stock I was getting 23 allllllllways. It sucks. The 2.7 is a great engine but it doesn't hold up to lift and tires, and is super sensitive if you drive over 2000 RPM on the highway or accelerate too quickly off the line.

My best tank ever was 28MPG. Now my best tank is 20MPG. Both times were on the same trip, same conditions at different times. If you lift it and throw tires on it you're best off by slowing way down or getting a V6.

I'm sure I'd be getting the same mileage with the V6 as I do with my 2.7 now that I have mods done, the only difference would be I'd probably enjoy the V6 a lot more for the same economy.

Probably doesn't hurt to mention that it's winter and all of our trucks economy suffers due to colder temperatures and in some cases, winter gas.

I drive the dog shit out of mine. And she gives me about 18-19mpg consistently. 285/17 but I see that you have a AC. That's a lot more truck to haul around. Still you should be getting much better than 14

I put over 100k on one that had 265/70/16's on it and I got 22-23 average. But in my experience with older 4 cylinder trucks gearing makes all the difference in the world. I had a 91 with 33's and a 22re that got about 15mpg. installed 4.88's and it went to over 20. And it would hold 5th on long grades on the highway at speed. Same with an old 86 Runner I had with 5.29's and 35's. It would get over 20. I've got an 89 22re 4x4 that's all stock except 31's and back when I actually drove it on the road about 10 years ago it was gutless and barely managed 16-17 mpg.
