My 98 has started to pop violently out of 1st gear when I go to take off. I can hold it in place and even then I feel it click into place. 163k on the truck. I replaced shifter bushing. I have a Marlin crawler clutch pack to put in yet. I'm wondering if I don't have a more severe trans problem. Something inside like a bearing other than the throwout. I refilled with royal purple 7590 so fluid is good. Going to double check that level though. Maybe put some Lucas in there. 1st is the only gear having issues. Am I looking at a new trans? Rebuild what I have? I've been searching extensively and it could be a multitude of things. I'm aware of that. Just looking for some More input.

Could just be out of adjustment. Not sure how you would correct that though. i have the same issue. But it rarely happens and only if im lazy and dont put it all the way in gear.

If youre brave, remove the tranny and open it up. See what first gear looks like. see if the teeth are stripped or the shift shafts are even in the right position

Adjustment you must mean the clutch pedal itself. I'm thinking that along with my clutch (assuming I have the original) being worn I'll replace the master and slave cylinder as well. Doesn't seem to be synchros. I'm hoping not.

clutch? no, the clutch has nothing to do with the gear popping out on it's own. this is an internal issue.

and it's not the synchros. if the synchros were out, you would be grinding gears extremely easily.

now where did I put that video about that transmission...............

check out this post. the 3rd or 4th post down i think is mine with a good video regarding how a transmission works.

there are bars that control how far the gears mesh with each other. it's possible that either those gears on the bars slid back from constant pressure, causing 1st not to fully mesh, or the gear is just right out ground down and easily falls out.

that video was pretty cool . im going to watch it again :burnrubber:

at a 1:42 when he zooms in on the shift shafts, you can see the gear controller housing held in place by bolts pressing against the shaft through the housing. it's possible the bolts slid a little bit on the shaft, causing the situation. mind you, it's possible. I don't know how possible, could be as unlikely as any of us winning the powerball.

reason why I think its out of adjustment is because those little gears really aren't all that long. if they were to grind down, there would be just about nothing to grab onto.

if the gear controller housing really is slid back slightly on the shift shaft, making it difficult to go into first, you may be able to reverse that by trying to force the stick into 2nd. WITH THE VEHICLE OFF, NOT MOVING, AND NOT PRESSING ON THE CLUTCH. this would hopefully push the housing back a little bit towards where its supposed to be.

but again this is internal adjustments. you'd need a tranny expert to verify.
