I looked for a thread on this but didn't see anything. Wanted to start a thread of off-road areas in Utah, excluding MOAB because I know there is a whole section dedicated to it.

I've only lived in Utah for a couple years, and haven't spent much time off-roading. Now that I just bought a new truck I'm interested to see what's around.

Hole in the rock trail, The group I went with never made it to the end after some unfortunate events but at the end of the trail is supposed to be a killer camp site with a historic surrounding as the trail was blazed by the early mormon settlers, you can even see the rope burn marks where they lowered the wagons into what is now lake powell. Majority of the trail is easy going, mostly slick rock. One section is pretty difficult but takes more balls than rig capability. Go with a group

X2 for Hole In The Rock Trail, not road, two different sections of the old settlers route. Tons of info about it. More history than you can shake a stick at, from thousand year old Native American ruins thru the frontier days into the gas/oil/uranium boom of the 50's.
It will take some seasonal/logistical planning but worth the effort. Spring, just before EJS is a good time.
I did it solo, a day in advance of a (known to me) group (crazy not stupid). Do it soon, it's getting crowded. For that reason lots of us are starting to keep the lesser known stuff offline. Talk it up with your locals \/.

Good source of Utah info here and great folks, many local to you. http://www.expeditionutah.com/forum/

Yeah, took my time, 2.5 days. The TH is only about 4 hrs from home. The back of my thighs were worn raw from sliding in and out of the seat for "self spotting".

Yeah we planned for 3 days but only spent two. After that ledge where it has the long run up the slick rock off camber and a slight dip we had a rollover, we already had one truck up top where the dome campsite area before grey mesa. I had to go up and upright him, so that was fun. Another guy brought a stock DCSB and his father was having issues with heights so he was on the edge about going further after the ledge because of his dad. The guy driving the disco ii called it after the roll over because he was top heavy and felt like he would have flopped for sure.

Oddly enough the guy who rolled, and 3 others including myself were willing to push forward to the camp site but after the 3 other guys fell out we just called it quits to not separate from each other. Huge bummer but ill be back to finish it, it gets pretty gnarly going up after the ledge thats for sure

Sorry to hear about the flop.
That climb up the east side of Grey Mesa definitely has "pucker factor". It doesn't help when there is a dead cow on the edge, bloated, stinking and covered in maggots. Coming back down is exciting, ya think you know what to expect but:eek:.
One of the fellows in the group behind me suffered some structural failure requiring some trail side welding (Jeeps).

I suggest a couple of books for you. There are TONS of great places to explore in Utah. My "go-to" book is the Benchmark atlas as it has most of the accessible dirt roads around the state mapped well.

The other good one for the Moab area is this one:

This is another good one. All of these can be found on Amazon

While there isn't a lot of "wheelin" in Dinosaur National Monument, there is a lot to explore off-road around the area. The Colorado side has a lot of really cool destinations and if you really want some good off-roading, you can swing down to Rangely, CO and go to Rock Crawler Park. Rangely has a cool campground, too. I know this isn't Utah but its about the same distance from Salt Lake to Moab as it is to Dinosaur.
