    I'm driving up to big bear this winter. This would be my first time driving up there with the family rather than a bunch of buddies. I'm wondering what would be the safest way up there, less mountain time and cliff driving etc

    Well there's the back way, it's safer I believe but takes you straight into big bear rather than going through arrowhead, then running springs, and all the way to big bear. 330 to the 18. It depends on where you coming from.

    Well I have a house in arrow head, and I just take the 18, but if you're going straight to big bear, the fastest way to get there probably would be the 38.

    Johnniefive;
    Go to Apple Valley and get on Coxey Rd which becomes 3N14. In 21 miles of easy dirt road you are in Fawnskin. You could even let the kids ride in your lap and "drive", great family time if you ask me. Youtube Apple Valley to Fawnskin. Enjoy!

    330 to 18, has the most traffic and gets plowed most often. 18 all the way will be a longer route. 38 has a lot of tree coverage and problems with black ice.
