I was stationed in Fort Walton and Tampa at one point. I loved it. The only downfall is the snowbird effect is like x10 compared to AZ. They are also gun loving folks like AZ.

 

I worked in FL A LOT over the last few years. I was flying there every week for months. I've been to all parts of Florida many, many times.

I'd rather get fucked in the ass by an elephant, wearing a sandpaper condom (80 grit or lower), while yelling racist slurs at me vs. living in FL.

Only good thing about FL is the sea food.

Humid as fuck, cost of living is slightly higher than here, you get to keep your guns, alligators, lots of east coast shitheads, lots of southern red neck dumbasses, the drive out there is easy enough as you'll know how close you are to Florida by how frequently PitBull is on the radio and once PitBull is on the radio NON Fucking Stop You're In Florida . . . If it's only a one or two year assignment and you can come back after then do it for the money and experience.
I've done this several times to Japan, it's the Not Spending the extra money you're making part that's difficult . . .

 

Then I'd wait until an assignment opens up in Hawaii or Austin or my personal favorite anywhere in Japan ! ! !

Too bad, I have fams there as well, and much more extended fams as well.

Austin, Tx is a very high tech town, climate is mild, not as hot as here, does have some snow, all the out door scenery and life as here, schools are very good, real estate is still less expensive than here (but approaching fast) cost of living is the same but it's Texas so no Federal Income Tax so your money goes a little farther, it's a college town so plenty of 'Urban Scenery' aka hot bishes running about, plenty of good restaurants, bars and venues. Not a bad place to be . . .

 

Humidity - you don't notice it when you live there it just is. Just like how visitors here get bloody boogers from the dryness.

Hurricanes - Well Univ of Miami does suck....But I lived in S.FL for 20 years and never had any damage at our house.

Bugs - yes bugs there do suck. More roaches and tons more skeeters

Tourists & Snowbirds - yep suck, along with full time retiree's and New Yorker's. South Florida is like a piece of Long Island broke off and floated south and a piece of Cuba/Haiti broke off and floated north and they collided in South Fl. Cracker culture is being replaced

What brought me out to AZ was grad-school, but really I was blown away by how much public open space was here. After growing up in FL, a change of scenery and the outdoor opportunities (mtn biking, climbing, backpacking etc.) were what made me chose ASU over continuing on at UF. There is lots to do in FL if you like the ocean, and there are some areas of public woods, but the mountains are far away and there just isn't a lot of undeveloped public land to romp in.

That being said, I would be OK with going back to FL depending on where. WPB south, no way unless it was the Keys. Orlando, no way. Vero Beach up to Jacksonville are cool. I dont know a ton about Tampa, but it seemed like an OK city. North Florida (north of Orlando) is awesome.
