A family member has a 2006 tacoma 4x4 stick shift and has been having some issues.

So it all started a couple months ago when the emergency brake locked up causing the drivers side tire to lock up after sitting overnight. We had it worked on at a local shop. First they replaced the driver rear parking brake cable and we thought that was it. Well after that it happened again and they replaced the brake shoes, resurfaced the drone and right rear wheel bearing. Said person was still very timid about using the parking brake and now one day when sitting (without the parking brake on) the rear drivers side tire locked up again.

Anyone have similar issues or know what to look further at? The shop we have used for years (now working on it no charge since the original fix didnt do anything) has no more ideas.

the bellcranks (the arms bolted on the the backside that activate the pbrake)
have simple metal pins to pivot on, and they rust and sieze

you need to either hammer them fully loose again and pack with a huge blob of grease

    or get new ones <---this

Thanks, I will have to check that out.

I should note that it does not stay seized up, it comes loose and then drives like normal. I forgot to add that in the beginning.

I have had the same issues for almost all of my truck's life. I have replaced everything - including cables and wheel cylinders - all OE. I just wish they were discs - so much easier to deal with.

not rear discs. rear discs still have a drum parking brake in the back with the same setup, only smaller,
and now a disc has been added in front of it so to speak

bell cranks rust and seize on toyota drum brake assemblies whe the park
brake is almost never used, they rust solid. if you use them all the time they will
    never rust solid

You must have 2004 brakes on your 2013.

This. There are no bellcranks on 2nd gen parking brakes.

I too have played with them in the past - I've found an air hammer with a blunt punch, and penetrating lube makes pretty quick work out of freeing them up, and fluid film keeps them that way for quite a while so long as they get used after that.

So far I haven't had to mess with my parking brake system on the taco other than a quick cable adjustment when I first got the truck used. I'm glad they went away from the bellcrank system, though it too worked well when not seized.
