I received a letter in the mail a while ago about getting my spiral cable replaced under recall. I have a 2008 model. I did not have an airbag light illuminated on my dash but figured I should get the spiral cable replaced anyway since there's a recall on it. I brought my truck in to the dealership last July to get out replaced. With the original cable I had smooth turning with zero noise. Ever since I got the coil replaced I have a slight clicking noise when turning the steering wheel, especially when spinning it to a bunch of times to do a u-turn or sharp turn. Has anyone else experienced this after the recall? I never brought my truck back to the dealership to get it fixed. Does anyone know if there's a reason why it's now doing this?

Something is wrong. Take it back and give them the opportunity to fix it. You probably have a wire or something a little out of place and is hitting when you rotate the wheel.

yeah they fucked up the installation is what happened

spiral cables are pre-wound up in a specific position
and need to be installed perfectly or it will unwind
a bit then be jiggered for life

get it replaced again, or have them fix (re-index) the one they installed

Very good. Thanks guys. I'll see if they can take care of it. I should have brought it in immediately after I noticed it. I've been dealing with the noise for a while now.

Update: I just dropped the truck off at the dealership. When I pick it up I'll give you all the outcome.

Just picked up my truck. The noise was coming from one of the clips that secures the spiral cable. The dealer ate the cost of labor but charged me $7 for shop supplies and tax due to me waiting such a long time to bring it back in. The tacoma turns with no clicking noise now.

Glad it worked out but charging you $7 is just chickenshit behavior on his part. For some reason he just wanted to give you a little poke in the eye.

Glad you got it done. IMO after waiting so long the 7 bucks was as stated just a poke in the eye... but a small price to pay.

It sure was a poke in the eye, but I poked them back by getting the truck nice and dirty off road before the complimentary wash they gave it. That was worth the $7.
