So rarely do I use 4 wheel "low" that I forgot how to get it out. I can turn the dial to 4hi and 2hi but the light stays on and the beeping starts ...and oh the beeping, I want to kill my dash.

Too poor to list anything interesting.
Make sure you're stopped before you go from 4L to 4H.

And if you get it wrong, you have to turn the knob back to the range you are actually in (4Lo in this case), wait for the beeping to cease (you'll be glad when it does), and try all over again making sure to get the above points correct.

I had hell getting mine out of 4 low when it was new. On one occasion, I had to try about 5 times and yes, I was about to tear my dash out too (BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP). I have used mine enough now that it comes out on the first or second attempt. Put it in 4 low once a week or so just to keep it active. Just don't drive far when doing this unless you are on a dirt/icy road at low speed (obviously).

Have put mine in reverse and back up a little in case drive line was in a bind, then in forward and while rolling very slow (2 mph?) shift auto tranny into neutral then selector to 4 h or 2wd and usually shifts right out of 4 lo.

Reading the manual would've prevented this and will probably prevent other future problems you may have.
