Decelerating and Accelerating

Recently I have been having issues with my 2003 4wd Xtra cab Tacoma. Ever since I bought it six months ago the truck would clank whenever I would come out of a stopped position and accelerate forward. It has never had this issue when facing up hill but was more prone to the sudden clank or jerk into gear. When I purchased the truck it hardly ever did it but now it has gotten worse.

So to sum up the first issue:

When putting the truck into drive and providing acceleration into first gear, the truck sounds like it is slamming into gear to move forward. Not a hard slam but noticeable for sure.

Recent development:
When I come to a stop in traffic or whatever the case may be, the truck will rapidly come out of gear and stop on while lurching a little and jerking. It has been a scary issue because of the jerking in traffic.

Last night I drained my transmission fluid, changed my transmission filter and put new fluid and high mileage ATF fluid to help with build up. So far the truck seems to be running at higher RPMs than normal but it also seems like it has a little more go behind it.

The issues are not solved from doing this however the truck does seem to be running better.

Help if you have any suggestions or have had similar issues.

axle wrap, most folks fix it by adding a leaf or get all new leafs. Or you can do what I have been doing for the last year, ignore it.

Your rear springs are likely worn out allowing the axle to twist or wrap. This binding happens during braking, then when you release the brakes, the bind releases.

How many miles on the truck?

 

My truck has 128k. It feels like it is coming from the front end.

Could anyone tell me more about axel wraps? Replacement, cost, location on vehicle.

Axle wrap is a condition, not a solution. The solution is rear leaf spring replacement. Here is an image that depicts axle wrap:
