But the vehicle is not unattended when my wife and daughter are still in the vehicle. No different than leaving the key in the ignition on any non 'smart key' vehicle. I get some of the ideas behind it, but it seems they made the restrictions on the system way too specific.

The fact is that any logical person who mashes the lock button on their FOB after exiting the vehicle, like every vehicle before, regardless of the circumstances of it running or not expects it to lock. Same with pushing the lock button from inside the cabin. Changing that 'normal' behavior seems like an oversight.

    Sell it then. Problem solved.

You overlooked aspects of the truck. Guess you should have done some homework.

The truck has been designed to work the same since day 1. If you didn't like that, you shouldn't have bought it. Don't expect it to work differently after the fact just because you don't like it

lol, you think everyone here read the owner's manual cover to cover before buying the truck? It's a design that has oversights and could use improvement, in my opinion. Just because it was like it from day 1, doesn't mean it couldn't be better. It's kind of ridiculous to say "if you didn't like the way it was designed to work, you shouldn't have bought it," if that was the case then everyone would have bone stock vehicles, wouldn't they?

I expect a keyless entry system to lock when I push the lock button, just like it has for decades. The fact that it doesn't do that, and then someone can come along and hop in my truck and take off, is a glaring oversight. At the very least, it should be a configurable option. I'm curious if this is new to 2016 or if it's par for the course in other vehicles with this same smart key technology?

Don't leave the truck on/running unattended and someone can't hop in and steal it.

Remote starts do not turn the truck on, they only start the engine. This prevents someone from stealing it

Again, it's not unattended if my wife is in the vehicle with my 8 month old daughter. I leave the truck running, hop out, hit the lock button before shutting the door, and go in the store to pick up some milk. Some stranger walks by (who read the Tacoma owner's manual cover to cover, I guess) and opens the driver door and drives away with my wife and kid. Design flaw. When I push the lock button, I expect the doors to lock. Period. Like always. Clearly I have to accept that this is NOT the behavior in this truck, doesn't change the fact that I think it's a major oversight on Toyota's part.

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. Someone stealing a truck with 2 people in it. Might want to worry more about psych meds than a door locking

I guess your wife isn't capable of reaching over to flip the manual lock lever?

Wow, you're the most condescending (not to mention double-posting) person I've seen on this forum yet. Been here 2 days and already adding someone to the ignore list! :bananadance:

FYI, my wife is only 5'0 and probably couldn't hit the manual lock from the passenger's seat without climbing over the console. But again, changing the way it has been done for decades, in a manner which is less safe is a mistake, in my opinion. What good is keyless entry and automatic locks when I have to remember to manually engage the lock or use a physical key to turn the lock cylinder when I want to run in the store to grab a gallon of milk while keeping my family warm or cool in the truck?

It's not changing anything. Any car with keyless start operates on the same logic.

There are cars built where you can't lock the doors with the Key in the ignition. Not a new concept invented just for smart keys.

OP - I went outside and looked in my manual for more information, but I only found out how to unlock ALL the doors with the FOB by configuring the Nav Unit.
There is also a setting in the Nav unit to LOCK all the doors once the shifter is moved from Park.

I found some info on-line from another forum explaining how to lock the vehicle with the 2nd key inside the FOB.

    http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/1...07-2011/330122-warm-up-car-without-worry.html

I have NOT had a new vehicle since 2005; so I was obviously NOT aware that the driver's door did not lock when it was running and a driver was not present.

There are a few Toyota "Techs" that frequent this site:
Perhaps one of them reading this post can provide us with some insight as to whether or not the
Toyota ECU\PCM diagnostic\scan tool has a menu or interface that has a setting to change the driver door to be LOCKED with the engine running and no driver present.

If there is a setting; the dealership would most likely have to change it as most new vehicles require a "subscription" in order to perform changes on any computers on the Taco.

An example of this; is my brother in law had his SEAT BELT buzzer disabled on his 2015 Taco; as he was working around the yard/farm and he was constantly in and out of the truck. Load up some stuff .... jump in move ahead 10 feet .... jump out load more stuff ... jump in move ahead 10 feet etc. He didn't wanted to put on his seat belt and take it off 1000 times a day as he was NOT constantly driving it. So he paid the dealership to go into the computer and disable the buzzer. I "think" he may have signed a disclaimer I am not sure.

You've never heard of carjacking?

I start mine in the morning and lock it with the key. The fob is in my pocket. Then after a few minutes I unlock it with the key, since it wont recognize the fob. A little less convenient, but it locks.

I don't do it to protect my engine, I do it so my ass doesn't freeze to the seat when I hop in. :)

Yeah, but I didn't want to come out and say that. :)

OP - just to confirm. I checked this out today to confirm.

To Test: The Taco is running, and I am in the driver's seat.
I Exit the vehicle WITH THE FOB, and remove the single key from FOB and insert the Key in the door lock.
I turn the key and it locks ALL FOUR DOORS.
I Test all FOUR DOORS to ensure they are locked.
I walk away into the house and leave the truck running.
FOB and Key are in my pocket NOT in the truck

I wait about 10 minutes to make sure Taco still running, by opening front door to hear it.
(Note: House is about 100 yards from where I had parked)

I get to vehicle and try and unlock doors with the FOB: Nothing Happens.
I insert the single key from FOB into the door and unlock the door; ONLY driver's door unlocks
(Note: My FOB is set to unlock ALL FOUR DOORS at once)
Get in truck and put in gear and drive it from the street to in front of the garage: no problems

    Summary:
With Taco running and NO FOB in the unit, it can be locked safely while running.

Problem is some people don't like taking the key out.
