Which Wiring Harness for a Tacoma with JBL?

I currently have the stock JBL stereo in my truck, but I'm looking to replace it altogether and wanted to know which wiring harness I 'need'. The JBL harness seems to be different then the non-JBL stereo harness.

The only harnesses I see available are the ones that allow you to tie into the existing JBL system (amps and speakers) which I do not need to do. I just want to plug into the truck's stereo harness and get power, ground, illumination, etc.

Scosche:
TA07SR - This allows you to use the stock JBL system (amps and speakers) with an aftermarket HU.

70-8117 - This is supposed to be the amp bypass, but it seems to require the JBL amp to be used still.
70-8113 - I'm thinking this one may work. It seems to have the right connector... I could just cut off the RCA connections since I wouldn't need them and make sure the wires match up to where I need them.

I have spoken with tech support at Crutchfield, Scosche, Fry's Electronics and none of them seemed to know "for sure" what I need.

If anyone can shed some light and tell me for sure what I need I would greatly appreciate it.

 

When I was ordering my hu crutchfields website said no equipment compatible with my truck and it was because I had the jbl system and they had not tested it. I finally found the harness I needed and talked to a tech at crutchfield who is a toyota guy and he confirmed it. I couldn't even find this harness on their website, but they sell it. I am at work and don't have the info handy, but I will get back to you with the item #, cost, etc.

 

you can just use the wiring harness that comes with your new headunit. Just splice the current wires that are in your truck with the wires on your new wiring harness that comes with your headunit. The wires will be color coded. Easy as pie.

I know I can do this... but I'd rather not splice into the factory wiring if I don't have to.

 

Why not? It doesn't effect anything if you do it properly.

 

You definately don't want to be splicing radio wires. The adapter I have, purchased from crutchfield is the scosche

This adapter will allow you to install a new headunit into your truck and maintain use of the factory jbl amp and speakers. It is a simple plug and play application. Just remember to turn up your factory stereo to volume 35 before removing it to install the new headunit. That will be in the instructions. I think this may set the amp level. Thanks for your reply. The harness that you have listed is made to interface the stock JBL amp, which I'm not planning on doing. After some investigating I think that the Metra Harness 70-8113 will work. The following link shows the wiring diagram for a 2nd gen tacoma with the JBL stereo: Looking at this diagram, the only connections from the main harness that I'm interested in are the BAT (pin 1), ACC (pin 11), and GND (pin 20). I went and looked at the 70-8113 harness at Fry's this weekend and it looks like its the right connector with pins 1, 11, and 20 wired out. So in my mind this should work and will be much less expensive.

The one thing that I'm still not sure about is the steering wheel controls. They are wired to the 'other' 20 pin connector, which none of the aftermarket harnesses connect to... it's a smaller harness... so I'm guessing that these will have to be spliced somehow. Since there are only three wires, I'm going to try and pull the pins from the the harness so that I don't have to cut the factory wires... we'll see how it goes.

 

Why is it that you don't want to use the jbl amp? Are you adding another aftermarket amp? Also you know about the pac steering wheel control module, don't you?

 

Yep... I'm looking to put in aftermarket amps, so there is no need to connect the JBL amp.

Yes, I know about the pac steering wheel control module. There are three wires from that module that will tie into the smaller (20 pin) factory harness containing the three wires I referenced in an earlier post. Since there is no aftermarket harness that will connect to the smaller factory harness, I'm guessing these wires will have to be spliced somehow. I'm going to try and pull the wires from the harness in order to connect them up to the pac module.

Every steering wheel control interface that I've seen using the pac module has spliced into those three wires without using a harness... I'm thinking they just don't make a harness that size.

 

Yeah I'm sorry to say this is no where close to true. It is by far one of the most difficult to hardwire. I'm still in the middle of doing mine. The wiring harness diagram is mia. Its been almost 2 months that I've been at this.
