I am looking to replace the stock Dunlops on my 2014 DCSB SR5 4x4 tow package. I do most of my driving on the highway as I live in Atlanta. This truck is my daily driver. I also get off road a fair amount and tow trailers occasionally, more with better tires. I have narrowed my search down to these two tires. I know they are similar, but wanted to hear from y'all. I am am going to stick with the stock size 245 65 r16 I think with at least a c load rating.

i've ran both and they are both very good tires, however i beleive you can only get the st maxx in a load range e also they are very heavy so they kill mpg's. i have the at3's in load range c in a 265/75/16 and they work great off and on road.

I've also had both and currently run the ST Maxx and while good, I think you'd be better off with the AT/3...

I don't think these tires are very similar at all other than both being made by Cooper...

The AT3 is a road first AT tire
The STMaxx is an aggressive AT/MT hybrid

The AT3 will shine on pavement, wet roads, MPG, ride quality, noise etc.
The ST Maxx will shine in snow, mud, rocks etc.

I drove the Hankook ATM for 70k miles, very similar to the AT3 and I have 20k or so on my C rated Duratracs which are similar to the ST MAXX. Huge difference in tire for our trucks. If I only cared about pavement and forest road gravel etc. I would be in the Hankook all day long. I wanted better traction in wet sloppy snow, light mud, and so went with the Duratrac.

    They are night and day.

AT3's for sure. Not to mention they're one of the highest rated AT tires out there.

Not the size you are looking for, but it'll give you a comparision:

    265/75/16:
    • ST/P: Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 39lbs. AT3- 40lbs, ATP- 39.9
    • 6ply C: Duratrac - 45lbs, General Grabber - 49lbs, AT3- 46lbs (C has 2 ply sidewalls 1000 denier poly), BFG KO2- no, Toyo OC ATII- 45 (31.7”), Goodyear Wrangler Authority- 44lbs (31.6”).
    • 8 ply D: Yokahama Geolander AT S - 50lbs,
    • 10ply E: Duratrac - 51lbs, Yokahama Geolander AT S - 53lbs, BF Goodrich T/A KO2 - 50.2-53lbs, BFG KM2’s- 53lbs, ST Maxx - 55-56lbs (Amazon, 56 bathroom scale) , ST- 48lbs (manufacturer), ST 48-49lbs, STT 55lbs, H Dynapro ATM- 51.5, AT3-

Heavier the tire the worse the gas mileage, generally speaking.

Do not get ST Maxx for highway driving DD. Plus like others have mentioned unless they've started making them recently, you couldn't get a load C. And you def don't want Load E.

Get the AT 3. My mom has them, my neighbor has them, a co-worker also has them and they are great tires. You won't regret it. I run the ST Maxx and while awesome, the AT 3 will be better for what you stated your use will be.

I've got p-rated. My offroading is generally wma and forest roads and a few milder trails getting to kayak put-ins and take-outs. If I end up having any puncture issues my next set will be C's. But so far, so good, and I have no idea what my mpg's are, I've never calculated. According to Treaddepot the 265/75 p's are only 1lb heavier than stock 265/70 Rugged Trails.

AT3's sound like the go to tire, but the ST MAXX looks soo bad ass though!

Installed Cooper At/3's (265/70R16) and ProComp 7089 Rims. Tinted front windows. Did the Fog Light Anytime mod. Did the tailgate mod. Added running boards. Adding sound Deadening from RAAMaudio. Replacing stock speakers with Polk Audio DB6501's.
I went with the AT/3's 265/70/16's Wider look looks good, but lower profile keeps the OD the same.

I agree, but when it came down to it,the AT3s were over $200 cheaper. Plus I got a $75 Visa card with my purchase through Discount Tire.

Most of my off-roading is getting to put ins and take outs as well. I think I am leaning toward the center rated because of the towing I do.

I have the Adventurer AT. It's the Pep Boys specific AT3. I went from 265/65/17 Dunlops to 265/75/16 ATs in C load. I chart my mileage and my city mileage dropped by 25%. Highway isn't so bad going East and West, maybe 10%. I like the tires. They aren't loud. They've done well for me in this cold wet weather (why I went ahead and bought them).
