2016 double cab subwoofer enclosure

I've always been somewhat of an audio junky, so I decided to build myself a subwoofer enclosure for the new truck.
My goal was to keep everything intact and retain all functions, as I did not want to hack up my brand new truck. This particular enclosure is made for the JL 10tw3 subwoofer. The lack of space behind the rear seats definitely has its share of restrictions. Below are pics of process and finished product.

Materials and products used:

- 3/4 + 1/2" mdf
- woodfiller
- wood glue
- silicone sealant
- primer
- wood screws
- herculiner
- sandpaper

Well done. Have you put the sub in yet and had a listen? This is something I am looking at maybe trying to do.

I haven't installed the sub yet. I still need to purchase a few more components before I install the system. Currently I am debating between the Audison bit one or JBL ms8 dsp...tough decision. Also, I need to purchase some dynamat (or similar) and fabricate some speaker spacers out of 1/2" hdpe.

The box is sealed obviously...goal is sound quality with tight accurate bass vs. earth shattering base. Volume is .495 cu ft...which is just shy of the required .5 cu ft required for the 10tw3 subwoofer. I think it should be fine.

The sub will be powered by a JL HD900/5 amp, JL C5-650 component speakers up front, JL C2-650 coax for rear fill. I will probably make a more in depth build thread when I start putting everything together.

 

Unfortunately the sub enclosure is not for sale, but thanks for the interest.

You'll need something to push the bottom of the bin out a little bit. Or cut a little half moon out of the top. Because once you install the sub, you'll be able to hear it slapping the bin (assuming it's turned up enough to). That's what was happening to me, so I found a way to push the bin out so it doesn't hit anymore.

Do you happen to have pics of your box?...Also, how much clearance do you have between the mounting surface and edge of the bin?

 

Ah, I just looked at your box again in the bin. Looks like you might have some clearance there already? I'd say at least a 1/4-1/2" should be fine. Here is a pic, mine looks a lot more ghetto because it's a prefab box though haha.

When I first installed I could hear the sub slapping and rattling the bin. I stuffed a sheet very tightly in the front to mitigate the bin vibration and to push it out a bit. Looks dumb, but it's temporary until I decide on a different solution.

Kudos on that box you built, BTW. Thing is slick as hell.

 

Haha, no worries...more important that it gets the job done and you are satisfied with the sound quality.

I'll keep what you said in mind. I created a little depth with the side profiles of the box, which gives me 1.5" from the mounting surface to the edge of the bin. That's the best I could do given the space restrictions. It should leave me with a little over half an inch of clearance with the sub installed.

Speaker felt. Glad I bought a big roll, learning curve to getting it stretched and pressed into to speaker depression.

Under passenger seat.
Initially had hoped to mount it on the face of the box but would cut into the volume too much to meet the 0.5cf recommended for the JL 10TW3. Would have been possible had I excluded the grill (that thing ate up a lot of airspace). Also it simplified an already complex engineering situation.

 

Hey Guys I’m new to the community. I just bought my 2016 Tacoma double cab. I was trying to research sound systems for this truck as there’s like very limited space. I stumbled on this thread and was wondering if some of you my tell me what would be the best route to go in terms of equipment and specs. I was looking at skar audio 12” but it seems the mounting depth may not work? I love hard hitting, clean base so don’t want to waste my money on stuff that won’t work or isn’t worth it. I’m not extremely picky or overly concerned with modifications just want quality sound system with clean look?
