Will do. Good to know that others are having the issue as well. Hopefully it will extend to cover later years if more people are having problems.

Im having a hard time telling if it's coming from the front or the rear brakes, Ill have to listen a bit closer.

I would like to think you could tell. Mine sounds like a small fog horn for about that last 1/2 mph.

Really easy way to tell, go through a drive through and stick your head out the window every time you stop. It'll reverberate off the wall and you'll hear it better.

Mine started doing this yesterday. Wasn't aware of this TSB for previous years. Think i took care of it.

I used the e-brake when I jacked the front end up to install my front lift. I figured that was the culprit. Driver side rear drum would groan just before stopping or if I slowly crept forward with light pedal applied.

Thinking it was the e-brake that caused it, at the next red light I slowly depressed the e-brake as I was coming to a stop, driver's rear locked up just as I came to a stop, released the brake and it hasn't done it since.

Scared the crap out of the lady in the next lane though, think she thought she was about to get creamed lol.

Hopefully it doesn't come back, but if it does I'll be using this TSB as cause for a warranty repair.

I was wondering if we could have it fixed under warranty even if the TSB did not apply to our years. I may be wrong but the TSB is not a recall, it is sort of just a "hey if this is happening this is probably the issue" type of notice for us and the dealership. So if we are having issues under warranty it would be fixed free, the TSB might just make things a little quicker to ID. So as long as we are still under warranty it should not matter that the TSB does not technically cover our years? Is my thinking correct there?

If you're under warranty they'll "fix" it, but most likely won't replace parts unless it reoccurs and you continue bitching about it.

My 15 was doing it for months, loud enough for me to hear with the windows up and it was squeaking about 80% of the time I came to a complete stop. Took it in a couple weeks ago they did a "brake service" on the rear drums and charged Toyota Motor Co. $161 for it. Took about 2 days for it to randomly start squeaking again.

Its very faint now and only happens about 1-4 times a day, so i'm not worried about it. I'll just wait till my 20k service and mention it to them, unless it starts squeaking like it was before the service. I'll mention this TSB and shoot for shoe replacement and having the drums resurfaced.

I just don't understand why Tacoma's still have drum brakes on them. I've had 5 new vehicles in the last 12 years and this is the only one to have drum brakes.

Mine had the squeal from the day I got it used with 52k miles. They said they would have to replace everything for 600$.. I replaced the shoes and had the drums honed once. Squel came back in a week. Has any one upgraded there rear breaks with something that won't squel on there own dime to know how much it costs in parts?

Roughly $500 in parts and labor. Here is the parts list for anyone interested.

Not a squeak to be heard anymore! image.jpg

Seems like a cheap fix that can't be to overly difficult to DIY it.

I was a test driver/technician at GM proving grounds years ago. I used to 'ring out' discs rotors by the pallet load - 100's before one would be specified to be the OE design. What we were changing were physical dimensions and sometimes alloys. The whole purpose was to get the squeal out of the range of human hearing; 1-2 mm could change the harmonics enough to 'eliminate' the noise. They may have squealed (vibrated) but if a human couldn't hear it, who cared. I would be curious to see what they changed on the drum. I just picked up a new drum. I'm going to check it against my original (2009) to see if there is any obvious change.
