09 access cab ceiling speakers

has anyone had the headliner down to check these things out? i am wondering if it would be worth it as far as staging goes to even mess with these... your thoughts?

 

i installed a whole new setup from front to back in my 09 access cab, i left the rear speaker wire connector unconnected in the dash, they are a total peice of crap! dont even waste your time with them. i cut holes on the back doors to use the 6.5 speaker locations that already exist in the metal and made my own grills that look factory.

How did you make the grill? Looks like you used some sort of fabric for the exterior instead of a hard plastic grill. Was it something you could do with a dremel? Really don't want to back date the door panels.

 

some ABS plastic, a heat gun and some grille cloth attached with GM style plastic body trim push pins.
i think i posted pics someplace in the A/V forum do a search for posts created by me and im sure youll find it.

 

I personally do not like rear fill. I vote to leave disconnect them and leave them that way. Put more time and money on the front stage.

 

Cool, thanks, I'm not at that stage yet, but I will keep your mods in mind as an alternative. I have to winterize the Taco and 05 Civic by this fall. Snow tires/wheels, block heaters and oil pan heaters don't just fall out of the sky, I wish they did. I like your install looks OEM which is what I'm after.

Did you simply install axial speakers or components? With your grill I imagine you could install components without issues.

 

you could but to be honest, why? like sooner said, although i am not willing to give up rear speakers alltogether i do want a little rear fill but you dont really hear thoes speakers anyway they just bring a little of the sound to the rear. also i have a HU that has 5.1 surround sound and i have a few DVD audio discs that are recorded in 5.1 to its nice to have the rear speakers or if you watch movies.
also when my navigation voice speaks it does it on the fronts and i can still hear music in the background through the rear speakers.
so i wouldnt give up on the rears all together but i also dont expect much from them either.
since i buy all my stuff at wholesale they were only like 40 bucks for MB quart which i happen to like, so i figured what the hell? besides toyota put holes for 6.5 in the rear doors i might as well ise them. i did however make a 3/4" MDF adapter to mount the rears in the doors, without it they would be at least an inch recessed in the door panel, i could have brought them further forward but all i really wanted was a little noise back there.

I think we can all agree that the 09 access cabs would almost be better without thier " rear speakers" stuck in the headliner.
Thanks to the members and the posts in T/W I have already decided to just leave them alone.

Your retro fit looks GREAT. I have done a bit of RECON behind the door panel and am going to attempt something along these lines. My question is.... Where are the stock speaker wires run to the rear speakers? and where is the best place to cut and run on the stock speakers. My hope is that they are not run up the A piller.

 

my answer is, i dont know and don't care, just run some new wire from the source, (head unit or amp) i ran mine through the grommets in the door hinge area the panel popps right out and you can easily feed the wire through the hole. i actually pulled the grommet out of the door a little ways so i had easier access to run the wire through it.

just leave the factory wire in the truck un touched and disconnected. if you ever go back to stock to sell the truck everything will work as before. i am a real stickler about not cutting any factory wires. i could have the stock system bask in the truck in less than 1 hour if i decided to sell the truck.

 

that is good advice and right down my alley being "STOCKcoma" man. I know my post used the word cut but i was really wishing for a connection somewhere in the rear of the truck for a disconnect point. I have come across the how too's on head unit removal.... now that I have read some I am not as worried abut pulling it out.

I actually just brought my truck in to the dealer cause of this issue. I listen to AM radio all day and the driver side ceiling speaker is crackling bad. Let you know the outcome.

 

hi mat. Let us know what they say. One of these days I will get around to relocating my "rear Speakers" in my ACCESS doors. Still havent done that.
