ARE truck cap weathertech floor mats
Hi everyone ive been lurking this site for awhile. Purchased a 2016 tacoma trd double cab short bed and have put a great 6000 miles on it. I had an ARE cap put on today and while driving home recieved brake malfunction message. Once home i turned the truck off. Tried to restart the truck now have engine charging system and brake malfunction messages. Truck wont start or go into gear without pushing neutral safety in. Just had it towed to the dealer. They were kinda clueless on the isue saying they have never heard of the issue. I read the thread about the guy in Hawaii but thought my issues were a bit different hence the new thread. Also the buisness that installed the cap on ca,e to my house and checked everything. He put it back to the way it was before the cap install and still nothing. I have no brake lights or lights to the cap. Wondering if and how it would not be related to the cap install. Thanks and this is a great forum....definatly helped me in research and final decision for buying my new truck.

Sounds like the canopy installer shorted the brake light fuse. That would account for the lights not working and the need for using the neutral safety switch. Check your fuses.

Yea first thing that came to my mind was they blew a fuse installing the cap. Definitely let us know how it plays out as I'm getting a leer cap installed next week. Good luck

I repair harnesses from cap installers and splice in trailer harnesses all the time. When it comes in with no brake lights and have to use the override to get it out of park first thing I look for is a Uhaul harness or fault cap wiring.
Just like everything in the automotive business, you have guys that do a good job and some that shouldn't be near a car. Open wire nuts or twisting wires together to wire a cap isn't the way to go.

Yup installer shorted brake line and blew a fuse. Had the truck towed to the dealer they fixed it and the original installer paid the cost. Installer had the dealer call him to confirm the problem. The installer offered no apology or any sort of follow up call. Im posting pics of shoddy craftsmanship and gap in the are cx canopy issue thread

I always try to get no splice wiring harnesses. Only adapters. U-Haul butchered my tail light wiring when installing the hitch.
