My understanding is the trucks are covered for 10 years under the TSB if uncoated. If it's inspected, passes, and is then coated they extend the original 10 years to 15. So if the truck is over 10 years and was never coated the OP could be on his own. In 1991 I bought an 84 Toyota pickup that had originally been owned by a construction company. 125k on it. The inside framerail on the passenger side was rotted from the rear spring hanger to the motor mount. I could stick my arm through the holes in the sides of the bed too. It happens here where they salt the roads, especially if you don't take care of them. It doesn't mean the truck is junk but if they don't cover it I hope he can weld. I've fixed far worse.

Toyota has a very loyal following and I think they've handled this whole frame deal very well. Had this been one of the big three they would have told everyone to pound sand.

Yes, I'm amazed that they replace frames. I agree with 85GT 79FJ40.

Just wondering, do the Toyota dealers in Canada replace frames under this program as well or is it just a US thing?

The frame replacement program covers 2005-2008 trucks so far

Cant believe they missed that. Most trucks with frame rot is in the same place, drivers side near the exhaust manifold, so you would think they would already know where to look...

It was slightly behind the crust. You can see it in my first picture, but I'm sure you could miss it if you were in a hurry.

15 years from new. It sounds like @Darkhawk's dealer has no idea what the hell they are doing.

The problem is that you're hitting the outside of the frame with the washer and oil, but the problem is on the inside. Look at your front cab mounts just behind your front wheels -- at the back of them is a BIG HOLE exposing the inside of the frame to the salt that sprays off the trailing edge of the front wheels. In other words, salt sprays STRAIGHT up into the frame, and RIGHT AT that spot where you have the rust through.

What are the differences with the new frames? Structural?

If anything it would be lower than normal shop rate cause it would probably be billed as warranty.

Yeah i would say it isn't necessarily the dealer giving you shit so much as their district rep not wanting to approve it. Their district rep has to show Toyota good numbers on warranty repair work (that they're not doing too much unnecessary warranty work) so that they can be better than the other dealers in the area. If that makes sense... I would go to a different dealership. Dealerships get paid for warranty work, though slightly less than normal a frame replacement is still big money for a service department to add to their monthly totals

There are some structural differences, but the structural differences are for strength rather than rust mitigation. There were structural differences introduced in mid 2006 in the motor mount area, and more in 2009.

In addition to structural differences, they are actually manufactured by a different company, and in a different country (Mexico). When Dana burnt themselves (by taking shortcuts on Tacoma frames), first the assets (including factory) were transferred to metalsa, then eventually metalsa moved production to Mexico, and much closer to the Toyota factory in San Antonio, which is where the frames would mostly have to end up anyway. The old frame factory was close to NUMMI where Tacoma *used* to be manufactured.

On top of all that, frame preparations and coatings are changed now. One of the problems under Dana is that they didn't clean the oil off the uncoated frames properly before painting, which caused the coatings to not adhere properly. So a proper cleaning, plus a better paint, and hopefully longer lasting frames. Not to mention stronger.
