Eh.. if you are bare pavement then shouldn't be on 4x4 at all. Also never go above 45 mph on 4x4.
What is brain doing at that moment? ?:redxfall:

Was there snow packed in your wheels causing them to be out of balance?

Snow packed in the wheels. Thaw it out or take it to a wash and all will be fine

Never above 45? Why not? You can engage 4hi driving 60mph.

The manual says to switch it in and out of 4x4 under 62mph.

sorry but 45mph is sort of wrong

you can go 100mph in 4x4 it ain't hurting a thing

    what does harm is:

-turning when you are in high traction (pavement) and in 4x4 due to binding and tire scrubbing/added pressure on tcase
it wears out the tires and increases wear on tcase chain and bearings

-having tires of unequal diameters front to back in 4x4 (at high speed this could be a problem)
such as someone who never rotates the tires, or just installs 2 news ones and leaves the old ones on

but, and if, tires are all good and you are not doing a lot of turning the tacoma 4x4 is fine on highway in 4x4...
it just won't let you go into, or out of it, above certain speeds (I think 60mph)

agreed yes if you are on bare pavement there is no need to be in 4wd

    -------------------------------------
OP your thumping was probably due to snow packed in wheels

BSM doesnt work well in snowy conditions. Snow, ice, and salt get built up on the sensors and they cant read.

EH 100 mph.. I guess you better reread the book, they said not to over 45.. I find you are a moron comes to driving 100 on 4x4.. I am sure you can bust the gears on it.. that's your truck not mine.

I am old school... knowing from working on muddy field on pipelines.. and dealing with 4x4...its more gentle on your gearbox.. yeah the book says 60.. but I never seen anyone try to go 60 in a snowstorm on a highway.. that would be call asshole.

You can be doing 60 on a dirt road or in the sand dunes.

    But chance is not.

As for the Op did you even think of checking your wheels for snow?

I did 85mph down a graded dirt road (but loose surface - not hard packed) in 4Hi one time. Truck felt much more stable in 4Hi than it did in 2wd. In 2wd the truck felt unstable as the truck would kind of shimmy left or right depending if one tire or the other lost traction.

Starts on page 244 and no where do they said to not exceed a certain MPH. Only for engaging must be below 62 mph. I've driven my old taco, frontier and f150 all well over 70mph in 4wd through the snow and never a problem. Once engaged you can drive as fast as you want. No damage will occur, increased wear? Maybe over a long time. But the truck isn't going to blow up

    Guess I'm an "asshole" :jerkoff:

Any problems stopping from 70 mph in the snow? Just cause you can, doesn't mean you should. I do agree with your last part.

Obviously that's not through the town and I don't tailgate people like a jerk off. I live in an area where we get almost 100" of annual snow fall a year. I don't always drive that fast but sometimes I do. It's not the snow you gotta worry about, it's the black ice

why go so fast in 4x4? anything over 40-50mph in a low traction situation sounds like instant death
