And yet it was spinning with enough force to smoke. What does that tell you? Stuck brake on the one that wasn't spinning?

That would mean that you had aftermarket lockers put on front and back.

    ?? o_O

no. If one tire is receiving power and spinning wildly like that the diff sends zero power to the other one. brake unnecessary.

    It was ON CLEAR PAVEMENT.
Also, diff NEVER sends zero power to the other one -- it ALWAYS SENDS EQUAL POWER TO BOTH. It may be very little power, but always ALWAYS equal.

Means that the wheel that WASN'T turning was receiving ENOUGH POWER TO MAKE SMOKE ON PAVEMENT.

I find it very frustrating when people don't understand simple physics.

Not talking about brakes pressed. FROZEN brake, i.e., just that wheel on that axle won't turn. Note that OP implied that when the rear diff was locked, NO wheels turned.

physics huh? ok - you can go on thinking that your open diff always sends the same power to each wheel, and pavement that has been recently cleared of snow is going to be dry.

I'm with this guy - if you were breaking straps there might not be anything wrong with the truck. Just a boat load of snow.
But I don't really know, I live in Florida.

    Are you dense or something?
One of the wheels was smoking on the pavement under it. That means that the wheel that was STOPPED had equal torque on it, which was ENOUGH TO MAKE SMOKE.

PRACTICAL experience tell me that either the truck would be moving, or the stopped wheel had FROZEN BRAKES.

Anyhow, I'm done here, its pointless to explain physics to a brick wall.

Thanks for taking the time to enlighten me today. Next time I notice only one wheel on my open front diff spinning, I will understand that its because the brake is frozen.... and not because its an open diff. Sorry for being dense. Its people like you that make TW such a great place.

Its like everybody here is missing the fact that the wheel that was spinning is the one that was sitting on pavement WITH TRACTION.

If a wheel is spinning it does not have traction...

My rear had both tires spinning. It rumbled because they were trying to grab something as they spun. That rear seams a little light to me. We opened up the tonneau and filled it full with snow in the bed for weight. I think you guys are right. We did break up the snow and ice on the underbelly. But I think you are all right about the tires. They suck. And admittedly, there was probably a bit of operator error. I'm not too proud to acknowledge my own fault. I'm still comparing the two trucks with every test. I loved my Frontier, but I love my Tacoma too. Wish I could have both, actually.
