The battery in my 2011 DCSB is nearing 5 years old. No obvious signs that it's giving up, but, I have an opportunity to replace it now (on someone else's dime!) So here's the 1st world problem..... When I disconnect the battery, I understand certain things (ie; Radio presets, etc) may be lost. The only thing that concern's me (and my OCD tendencies) is.......Will I lose the oil change reminder idiot light mileage? A simple yes or no.......

Thanks guys! Now I can quit pacing the floor! I'm neurotic/OCD about my oil changes! Did NOT want to alter that timeline!

It's linked to the odometer brain box so unless your odometer resets to 0, it won't affect it.

Change the battery while the car is running and you will not lose your presets.

Also, just go to the battery place and have them check your battery to see where it's at. No sense in replacing a good battery, no matter how old it is.

mine just died on mine a month or so ago. it was the original and all it took was an accidental full drain. we were out camping In bumfuck nowhere so we had to wait for a rando to drive by and hope he was a good guy haha. it wouldn't take a charge at all so I had to hitch a ride into the nearest town for a new one. AAA doesn't come all the way out to some places. get it tested and if everythings not spot on, its always better to be safe than sorry. by the way, the battery had been performing 100% up till that point.

I've owned vehicles for the last 25 years. The vehicle has always run off of the battery, while the alternator charges the battery. No vehicle has run directly off of the alternator (that I know of). Am I missing something?

Maybe I'll realize I'm wrong after I pour a cup of coffee...

I was under the same impression. ive had batteries die while going down the road (albeit not in my taco) and the truck shut off. I don't think his statement is altogether true unless the tacomas are special

I used the battery out of my lawn mower to hold the memory a couple years ago. But I like the 9V battery in the 12V power tap. Should work just fine and much more convenient.

Every one of mi e mine will run without a battery in place. Except my Tacoma which I say because I haven't tried or had a reason to. But I imagine it will also.

It'll run off of just the alternator but it's a very bad idea. My understanding is that the battery provides an input to the voltage regulator and without that input the voltage regulator may not function properly possibly damaging any or all of the electronics on the car. Would it work sometimes, sure. But can it also cause damage, definitely. Now on an older car without all of the electronics and computers it's perfectly okay to do and it'll run all day long as long as you don't draw more amps than the alternator can provide.

Won't loose oil change and why would you not replace a 5 year old battery especially on someone else's dime. 5 years is pushing it.

I've popped the clutch to start and run vehicles with dead a dead battery many times over the years, but they always had a battery in them. I guess I always thought the battery needed to be there...

That's my contention.....The current battery MIGHT last 20 years.....Or it might go next week. Law of averages says it won't last a lot longer. Battery sales rep has offered to give me a new Optima OR a new Exide (obviously hoping to influence my future purchases) I'm seeing win/win.... (

This probably isn't the best idea. Maybe old school and things have changed but doesn't your battery provide more then just electricity, pretty sure it protects electronics against shorts and acts a ground. Think you are rolling the dice by allowing the truck to run. I'm not sure if its a yes or no answer, but I would play it safe and change with the truck off.

My thoughts exactly. That's not old school, the more electronics the more you need that battery in there.

It's been a few years, but I (literally) exploded an alternator on a farm tractor when I tried to swap batteries with it running. I took out the old battery and when I went to connect the new one, I got a giant blue flash from the alternator, all the smoke escaped, and it became well done toast. Not saying that'll happen on the Toyota.....Just saying I won't take that chance.
