What I would really like to do is just go to a car rental company and rent one for the weekend. Take it up to the mountains etc. Most rental companies are too cheap to get Toyotas though. They get Nissan Frontiers in their fleet instead because Frontiers are so cheap.

A friend of mine works at a dealer and he was telling me about that, they call it mental ownership. He said if they feel the buyer is serious they do it all the time especially with trucks. Guys go and show it to all their friends and friends are all impressed by it so then guy ends up buying it. I thought he was kidding but he swears it is amazing how many times it works. I'm not saying that's your case but I guess it does happen.

Do you need to know, or care?
Not sure of your age OP, but could be a deciding factor when it comes to solo test drive. I have always had the option of taking it out on my own, but have bought 6 vehicles from same dealer and always leave mine behind. Usually told to keep it overnight, but never have. I know what I want before walking into the dealer, so not much they can offer in a test drive that I haven't already investigated. 99% of the time, I know far more about the vehicle than they do.

Two of the Tacoma test rides I drove had a low gas light. I think dealers do that on purpose to keep test drives to a minimum on mileage low on the cars before they sell them. Conspiracy I tell you!

They come off the trucks with little to no gas. The usually don't fill them up until they are sold or if a customer is taking one for an overnight test drive

I liked it. But I'm not buying a new truck for a few more years as I like to keep them at least 8 yrs...shooting for 10. I did a write up in one of the threads in the 3rd Gen section of my observations/thoughts. I'll try and find it.

That's the reason I decided against an overnight test drive in the past. I knew I wasn't ready to buy yet, but that if I took it home I'd be signing the paperwork the next day.

Yes, I too fell victim to the "Jedi mental ownership" trick.
