One can never have too many light bars.
Think about that statement. Oil changes for the 3rd gen have 10K intervals so the 5k is bs. They are probably saying that so they can get reimbursed by Toyota for tire rotations. Dealers make a majority of their money through the service department and usually just break even on sales. They will say whatever they can to get the customers they sell to to come back for servicing. Even if it means flat out lying. They just want to get you in there so the service department can sell you a 60 dollar paper filter. It pisses me off when companies try to pick on uninformed consumers.

Would like to shed a light on this topic. Looking at the spin in type filter have the best design. It got a backflow check value in it to prevent backward flow of oil. There is a thread on this in the 2nd gen about oil filters. I cant understand the engineers are going back to old fashion of cartridge type. From this topic, seen videos and pictures. I dont see any check value on it. You gonna get more sludge and metal bits back in your engine and oil pan. So it gonna to have a shorter engine life. What the hell are they thinking? Dont tell me that gonna save environment, there other things need more to save the environment.

Is there a metal replacement for the plastic oil filter housing yet?

I saw a Toyota one on Amazon, but supposedly it doesn't fit the 3rd gen Tacoma.

They cannot void your warranty for not getting service done by Toyota. Back in the 70s and 80s car companies got out of line with voiding warranties because they "could" and got in deep crap. Toyota would have a lawsuit a mile long if they tried that crap. Warranties can only be voided if it is clearly something you did that was negligent.

Per the warranty and maintenance guide that comes with the truck:

"You are responsible for performance of the required maintenance indicated in the Owner’s Manual and this booklet. Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because you do not have records to show that you maintained your vehicle. However, any failure or noncompliance caused by lack of maintenance is not covered by this warranty.
When maintenance and repairs are paid for by you, these services may be performed by you or by any automotive service provider you choose. Toyota will not deny a warranty claim solely because you used a service provider other than a Toyota dealership for maintenance and repairs. However, any failure or noncompliance caused by improper maintenance or repairs is not covered by this warranty."

If the dealership is telling customers something inconsistent with he warranty guide, Toyota would probably like to know about it. Do you have an extended warranty provided by the dealer? I have seen lifetime powertrain warranties provided by the dealer that required all maintenance be performed by that dealer. But that was an explicit condition of the "extra" warranty not really covered by the Magnuson-Moss act. As far as your standard Toyota warranty goes though, the dealer should be ultimately held to what is in Toyota's warranty guide.

If the tech analyzes your vehicle and determines there was improper maintenance or non-compliance that caused the failure it becomes a he-said/she-said... wouldn't want to get into that battle and certainly don't want to spend the time or money on a court case. Best to save the records of service.

I have to ask, but has anyone really proven the stock plastic to be weak? I haven't taken it off yet, but I expect it to be a tough polymer. Think about polymer handgun frames, plastic doesn't always mean "weak".

I also feel like I'd rather have the plastic filter housing get sheered or cracked, than to transfer that force via a metal housing to the oil pan (and those threads).

I prefer the stock one. It's pretty robust and it would take an idiot to destroy it. Use the right tools and tightness and it will last as long as the engine. Also, you're not nearly as prone to burn your hands removing this one vs a metal one.

Not sure the 2016 4runner has the 4.0 and tacoma now has the 3.5

Wow. $200 for the spin on adapter that could void your warranty. No thanks,I'll leave it alone.

This looks like the same setup as in my wife's 2011 RAV4, except the filter housing is metal. It isn't hard to use, as long as you have a good cup-wrench. I got one from the dealership because I was hearing of aftermarket fit issues.
