Pop and Lock power tailgate lock questions

I just ordered the pop and lock power tailgate lock for my '15 DC. Also, I've see the tread for the support bracket install (considering ordering). I like the idea of running the wire into the cab through one of the body plugs under the fwd passenger seat vs. into the engine compartment and through the firewall. Just crawled under the rig and found these body plugs...






What's the best hole to use? How did you seal it? Any cons to running the wire this way?

Also, I wanted to use the conduit for the backup camera to get from the tailgate into the undercarriage.




How do you get into this conduit?

Is the '15 different than an '08? For my year I remember 2 locations you could tap into for the tailgate lock.

One method was to run it into the engine compartment then through the firewall. This involved running more wire and taking off more interior panels than the second option, which was to come up through a plug under the drivers seat and splice into a wire on the B pillar. I went with this second option and it was easy.

The plug is wrapped in tape and once you undo it you'll see what is in the first pic below. I taped the wire to a phillips head screwdriver, lubed it with liquid soap and pushed it through the grommet. The interior rocker panel comes out easy and provides the short path to the B pillar wiring. Of course, the '15 may not have the same wiring and plug location so ignore this if that is the case.

When I ran my wire I bought split loom cover and ran it along the factory harness (next to the frame), zip tying it every 8 inches or so. This is much easier than trying to get new wiring into existing factory wiring cover, IMHO.

 

I used the larger of the unused grommets under the passenger seat. Drilled a small hole in grommet and pushed the wire through. Didn't bother to seal it because it was a tight fit.

I chose to run the pop-n-lock wire inside the short (~10") tailgate camera harness (between the tailgate and the bed) rather than making a new hole in the gate or using a tailgate drain hole. I detached the holders at each end of the loom that fasten the loom to the gate and body, opened up the loom, ran lock wires alongside the camera wires from under the body where the connection is, through to the inside of the gate. Then I taped everything up and reinstalled the loom. The end result looks good, but to be honest I'm not sure I'd do it that way again, because it was a pain to pop the harness out of the plastic do-dads at each end of the loom, and I had to remove and replace a lot of the tape around the wiring for the camera because there wasn't much room inside the loom for another pair or wires - you can't just place the pop-n-lock wiring in the existing loom easily. It also took several tries to get the pop-n-lock wire in the correct position within the loom between the gate and bed, so that it was long enough to be zip-tied to the frame underneath without excessive wire hanging down. Definitely the most fussy part of the install if you choose to do it that way.

Agree with 916carl, between the gate and the passenger seat grommet, just get some split loom and zip tie to inside of frame.

I was too cheap to purchase the support bracket, fabricated my own using a wood block zip-tied to the cross-member in the gate. Trial and error got me a block with dimensions that prevent the mechanism from moving if forced. Seems to work ok.

So it turns out there is just enough room to squeeze the wire along the side of the clips in the frame and tailgate for the backup camera.

I taped it up with the conduit for the backup cam, and it looks fairly clean.

Ran the wire along the conduit for the brake lights, I'm concerned about the heat, hopefully it won't be an issue.



Entered the can through the smaller body plug.

What wires did you end up using to send the signal to the power lock? I have been searching and cannot find anything specific. I have a '15 and would like to code it so the double click opens the lock rather than the single click of the remote. Thanks!

 

You tube vids are great. I tapped into the power door locks for driver side rear door. Can't remember the color I think green and purple. I'll look for the video what model popalock did you get?

PL8540 Combo Kit. The instructions call for tapping the blue with black strip and the blue with light red stripe. I just want to make sure that these are the ones that unlock the same as the passenger door.

 

They are. I tapped into the colored wires listed in the instructions. The tailgate opens with the passenger doors.

 

Has anyone found a locking mechanism that allows to back-up camera to stay? I don't want to get rid of that thing.

 

maybe im missing something, but if your looking for a locking actuator that will lock the tailgate AND you have a fact camera, pop and lock sells one.

 

The "pop and lock " keeps the back up camera.

looks like they have one also that will allow you to get a new handle WITH a lock and key but you have to buy the camera clip. just did a quick look at the site. just a call away to make sure though

PL8540 kit. It works great, and allows you to keep the camera. You do not need the camera clip, as you reuse the parts from the original handle. I tapped the wires in the instructions and had no issues. Thanks for the help!
