Dead serious. Machines literally do as they are programmed. As far as vehicles go either the programmer fucked up, the tooling is old causing out of spec parts or the raw material had a flaw in its structure..

So parts on a machine don't fail thus causing production errors?

How about the humans who create the software and programming for the machine? Also a machine can fail and during a failure an issue can occur

I think he checked that box in his explanation. Root cause of failure is the human component.

If a part on a machine "fails" it will more than likely not work altogether.

If tooling is old and out of spec the machine isn't making an error. It's being fed incorrect data. Again not the machines fault.

As a machining instructor.... Machines do make mistakes, they fall out of tollerances every now and then.

Now do they make as many as humans? Of course not. But machines DO make mistakes.

Sounds more like a preventative maintenance issue to me. Machines are only as good as humans have designed and maintain them to be. GIGO theory applies here.

I work at a Honda and that's pretty much the standard procedure. They *could* shim it and set the backlash and its most likely be fine but Toyota reputation for making things right means they will replace the third member. They'd rather fix the problem once than bs you

Nope, even the most precise cnc's are not 100% accurate EVERY time. I mean depending on the machine, it could 1 in every 10k. But, tollerances are what they are. And are not always held.

Machine mistakes/no mistakes aside, at least the OP was able to get it fixed under warranty. Hopefully the new newer parts fix the problem.

    The better coast
Since the 3rd gen is still a baby they could want to just replace parts and send in the originals for inspection. (as opposed to a quick fix). They probably want to see the part so they can say "well this is a common problem we need to adjust here, here, and here to fix it". Then they know for the future models and any similar problems that come out.

I love how when discussing quality/reliability of any brand, some good-ol boy always chimes in: "Well, let me tell you whhuttt, my brother's wife's cousin's sister's grandpa had him a Chevrolet that last him 500,000 miles so I KNOW they are the best!"
Any jackass has a story that supports/or contradicts any brand name's deserved or undeserved reputation. All in all I do think Toyota is still on top of the QDR game if you look at re-sale and initial quality reports. Naturally the 3rd gen will have some kinks to be ironed out. All of you who dropped a cool $37k on your new Tacos are just the guinea pigs.

I tend to agree with this a little bit. I am new to Toyota, this '16 Tacoma being my first Toyota vehicle ever, so I really don't have anything to compare it to as far as owning another Toyota in the past. I really like my truck a lot, but time will tell if it's going to last. Overall I have zero complaints so far, aside from some 'clunky' downshifting and the dealer refused to check the trans fluid, my guess is because it's somewhat of an involved process, and they didn't want to be bothered and according to them. "it's a sealed unit so it should be fine". At least I had it documented at my first service, so if there's ever an issue in the future I can refer to that. Also, I really have had none of the other issues that others are complaining about aside from the clunky shifting from 2nd to 1st gear, which has actually subsided (weird how that happened after I took the truck in for its' first service). I've owned Subarus for the last 10 years and honestly felt like the fit and finish on those two vehicles I owned and both bought new (2006 Forester, 2012 Outback) was just a little better, and really were bulletproof mechanically. Some of the body panels on the Tacoma like the rear bumper cover (painted portion of a TRD Sport) for example just seem a little loose and not super secure, which in reality doesn't mean a thing, but little things like that don't illicit confidence in how the rest of the truck is put together. I did haggle for a great deal on the 7yr/100k mile warranty, which at first I regretted, but now kind of happy I did, with my only regret being that I didn't go for the 125k warranty! I really do love the truck though, and I guess time will tell!

The true test will see if Toyota fixes the manufacturing issues that are plaguing this new Tacoma.

Honda has a bad release for one of the Civic redesigns. 2010-11-ish. They fixed it the very next year. I'm hoping Toyota does the same.
