Honestly, Ive got the TRD OR and I do not like the MTS / Crawl mode. It just doesn't sound safe on the truck lol. But Like the OP I tried it in a variety of different hazards. Tried sand, it "worked". Tried a shallow mud hole and that was a definite no go.

The lever-operated T-case on the Trail Ed. is easier to modify to increase the crawl ratio, I think.

KDSS is a bitch if you modify the suspension though.

^Can always retrofit non-KDSS sway bars, or remove the sway bars completely.

Not true. I lifted the 2010 Trail I had and had zero issues with the KDSS. I locked the cylinders in place and installed the lift and did not have to calibrate or level the KDSS.

You should do a write up on that haha. Most people freak out about it.

I also like the price difference :)

Hey OP .... Welcome to TacomaWorld.

I have the TRD OR 4X4 AUTO; the crawl is a nice feature for less experienced off road drivers. I have 40 years off road, bush, ice, snow, hurricane etc experience. Do I need the crawl, probably not, but my WIFE uses my Taco once in a while. She does NOT have my experience, and I want her to be safe and she has a tool to help her if she needs it.

With that said each scenario of getting stuck is different. I used to Hunt game up in Canada and my truck would get stuck in some remote insane location I was trying to get too. Many times I had to get a Bulldozer to pull me out because tractors couldn't get there, and once a grader.

Point is when you get in a tough spot the 4x4 feature can help you, but there is a thing called common sense. I did NOT have any of that for many years. I have winched my truck out of many places: once I tried to through my hook around a Moose in Hudson Bay, but he was NOT having any of that. I had to roll down the window and crawl out because the doors where deep in the mud. Crawl probably wouldn't help.

OP find some trails and off road groups in your area. Now you know what it takes to get stuck; now you just need some practice getting out.

Happens to the best of us.

OP here is a music video filmed in Alberta Canada showing the CANADIAN way of helping out when we get stuck! Just a little humor and music ... this is where I grew up and learned how to get stuck and unstuck.

Nothing says "I'm a success" or "I'm a Real Man" quite like a 14 year old truck.

Guys I love my Taco. I have had the crawl feature on other trucks before this. Not that many years ago I was driving in a big snowstorm, and I turned down an access road and drove right into a 3 foot snow bank and got stuck. I immediately used the crawl control: which was getting up off my butt opening the door and CRAWLING to the front wheels and DIG them out and turn each hub on each wheel in -30F 50 mph winds.

NOW that gentlemen is CRAWL control.

Crawl feature seems good for a novice 4 wheeler. Watching toyota videos they are very deceiving. They are like pUT it in crawl and you get out of sand and climb right up that steep hill or down that steep hill. The only way to really learn how to wheel is just stick it in 4 wheel drive high or low depends on what you are in. My first toyota I got stuck once, that was when it was stock, then it went up and never got stuck again. You need to know your truck and trust your capabilities when wheeling. I've gotten my truck buried up to the axles and have always gotten them out on thier own with out any help.

Not sure crawl really is good for a novice. I think it might lull a noob into a false sense of security to where they end up really stuck.
