I can't remember where I read that Tacomas have air conditioner compressors that are labeled DENSO, but are really junk made by DELCO. They are prone to failure and expensive to fix.
I probably saw it on here, but I can't find it. I'm posting a poll to see if it's true.
I'm thinking of replacing mine before it blows up and contaminates the entire system.
I've got the blinking A/C light no cool syndrome, comes and goes.

If the compressor is spinning free and you have blinking light it could be many things, not just compressor. Have you checked your belt, charge, pressures. Don't just fly to the worst case problem. If you have high pressure the high pressure switch will cut it out at higher rpm. If you have low pressure it's will cut out at lower rpm. Is your clutch fan ok?

I've got a 2010 regular cab 2WD automatic, and yes they do in have DELCO/Delphi-Harrison compressors. I've had my truck for more than 6 years and and a little over 55,000 miles. The A/C has never given me any trouble (aside from abnormal humidity in the summer of 2014 messing with the performance a bit) and numbs my fingers even on 90+ degree days.

Anyway, with regard to your truck, I've never heard of the blinking A/C light on any vehicle, but it sounds like it's more of an electrical problem? Maybe it's a problem with the connection between the HVAC controls and the components under the hood (compressor, etc)?

Check your belt if it slips the compressor light will come on and go off.

I've got two high mileage decade old toyotas in my garage with the original compressors and I live in one of the hottest cities in America.

    Luck of the draw?

I know of one guy who had an AC compressor fail. He was military stationed in Alaska and didn't use the AC for 2 years. Got transferred to Florida and it quit working almost as soon as he got there.

    This.

My compressor seized about 20,000 miles ago (I'm at 156k miles now...). I rarely used my A/C up until that point anyways; as I was living in a climate that didn't require it. That being said, I preferred just to put the windows down if I needed to get cooler temps in the cab.

Pulley still spins freely when the electromagnetic clutch is disengaged - but as soon as the clutch is actuated, the pulley seizes. I believe the failure is within the bearing assembly, which with this particular compressor is not a replaceable part.

Disconnected the wire that actuates A/C compressor when the defrost function is being used... hasn't been an issue since.

Thus the problem. Lubricant is carried suspended in the refridgerant and needs periodic circulation. Everyone should run theirs, even in the dead of winter, at least 15 minutes a week. Folks who complain about the compressor running when in defrost mode should actually be glad it does.

Yep. I never could understand people crying because their AC came on during defrost like every other vehicle made.

The compressor clutches go out a lot too, and that ain't cheap either.

That's how I found the 2.7 and 4.0 use the same compressor. My truck now has a clutch assembly from an '06 4.0 bolted to my factory compressor thanks to my original's clutch rubber shearing off.

My '07 had 210k on it when I traded it. Never had any compressor or any other A/C related issues. Never even recharged it. Still blew ice cold.

Previous tacoma lost a/c the day I looked at to buy. Negotiated for 2000$ less than asked. It had 38k miles at the time. Cost me around 1000 to replace. Toyota quoted me 1700 and didn't guarantee that price.

There are many aftermarket compressors out there now, they cost around 600$ canadian, better than the 1000$ for the clutch and new compressor. I also suggest replacing the relay as an old school repair habit due to the arcing caused by the worn clutch.

Most I've changed are around 160km/100miles.

No compressor issue but I've replaced my evaporator core already with 42k on it. Shit happens
