ok so I was getting off shift last night and went to cut my truck on everything turned over just fine but a high pitch noise/whine started coming from the motor gave it a little gas and it got louder I first thought it was the alternator but when I got home I checked it and my power steering pump and both are fine it sounds like it coming straight from the block in the middle. could this be my water pump? trying to narrow it down before I start making rash decisions on rebuilds and such anyone else experience this problem? the truck is running at normal temps just has an annoying whine when I start it now.

Anything that has a bearing near the area of sound could be the issue.

Just a guess, might be the idler/tension pulley for the AC compressor. It's at the very bottom of the motor right in front. You'll have to remove the skid plate to get to it.
If that is the case, you can replace the bearing only and reuse the pulley. Easy fix and inexpensive.

If you have the V6, see if you can determine if the sound is coming from under the timing belt cover. I have heard of the timing belt idlers going bad.

Sounds like a water pump. Or something else internal. Best way to check if it's external or internql, is to remove one drive belt at a time and run engine for a few seconds each time after removing. It noise is still there after all belts have been removed it'll be internal. I have a vid of mine when it was pretty bad. Can post if you wanna hear it, if you don't get around to your vid anytime soon. And if it is internal, being the water pump if it is, you'll want to change that like, right now. Not pretty when it locks up. Trust me I know, ha. And if you don't already know about the kits, there's a great oem kit from aircabinman on eBay with everything you need with water pump, timing belts, tensioner and other parts to diy. Should all be done if it does turn out to be internal. Can post a link of that kit too if you want.

Ok so update on the situation I tried taking a vid but it didn't capture the sound well. I got home and opened the radiator cap and the coolant was still circulating so the pump is still working. touched a screw driver to the bottom of the power steering nothing unusual the sound isn't comeing from the ac compressor or alternator it's bugging the shit out of me called local stealership they want $75 just to look at it. sounds like a bad bearing in the top end, what could that be? The noise happened immediately after start up yesterday after work. It's keeping normal operating temps. I'm stumped

    easy.

    disconnect battery cable.

remove all your belts and turn on the truck. If you want, you can remove the fan blade or clutch to make it easier to take off and put the belts back on. just don't run the engine for longer than a few seconds. if you don't know how or dont want to, the belts can wrap around the fan blades and eventually become free. either way.

replace battery cable and start your truck. your battery will be able to support all the electronics long enough to determine if the sound is coming from the motor.

if sound persists, replace timing belt, components, and water pump

if not, add the rear most belt from the crank pulley to whatever component it goes to and start engine.

does sound persist? if yes, that's the bad component. no? try the next belt. etc etc.

if you have the time and the simple tools. this beats paying 75 bucks.

don't be intimidated by this :). so long as you have a ratchet and metric sockets, it takes seconds to loosen each component to remove the belt. and about as long to actually remove each of the 3 belts. you then only have to run your truck for 15 seconds each time to see if the sound appears. you can do this in less than an hour. 30 minutes if your quick about it or have a bit of help..

    Here's the kit.
    I assume it's the 3.4?
    http://pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=180729034728&alt=web

There are a few different "packages" with less if you don't need certain items like drive belts. But this is the kit everyone here gets and recommends. From the seller aircabinman. Might as well do it all. Only hard part for me was getting the crank bolt to pop loose. And the crank pulley. If you've never done this job, it can be overwhelming. I questioned my ability to diy. But took my time and finally got it.
