'15 ACLB TRD OR. 4x4 running in H2. Worst tank was 13MPG. 90% city driving, short trips and occasional H4 usage because of winter/snow. Best tank has been 19MPG on the highway doing 75mph. I fill to the first click, no more. Gas up at the same station and same pump most of the time. Running Esso 87.

Its more then a few extra cents. The cost difference between 87 and 91 on average is between 12-15%.

And there was a dude on here who actually did it. HE switched from 87 to 93 . Did it for 1 year with 87 and 1 year with 93. MADE ZERO DIFFERENCE. Same mileage for both.

I am averaging 13.2 mpg this winter with a supercharger and 285's. Mostly city driving though.

    NO... most are 2WD.
Sport and Off Road TRDs are available as either 2WD or 4WD.

NO, more Off Road TRDs are 2WD. They have a plain black mud flap in back. The 4x4s have 4x4 or 4WD on their back flaps.
The 2016 models finally have a 4x4 badge on the back.

i just skimmed through this, you guys talking about super chargers know they hurt mpg if anything! It's not a turbo, its 1 of the cons of turbo vs supercharger arguments. Its belt driven off the engine.

you will get better mpg's in the summer.

premium fuel will not give you better mpg's, our trucks are not tuned to run 93 octane. (someone who has an FI set up may be tuned for it) but your wasting your money on a regular truck

Over filling your tank can cause several problems. It may also cause the check engine light to come on. As mentioned there is a tank vent. Not worth the risk to round numbers up.

If you tow you may need to use a higher octane fuel otherwise 87 is sufficient. If your truck pings with 87 and is newer you will need to get the software upgraded. I had to do that with my truck. I ran 91 octane until Toyota released the new software. Since I track mileage on every fill up there was no difference in MPG with higher octane fuel. You may notice a smoother throttle response with the higher octane.

19.8 last tank mostly hwy in some traffic. Speeds - 70 - 75. This is 1 mpg less than warmer weather. Stock Baja 4x4 DCSB 4.0. Once owned a Prerunner Trd OR so yes they do come in 2wd

I get 13mpg when my trips take me on roads with 80 - 85 mph speed limits.

daily commuting I get 18.3 average.

From all the treads I've seen, most people see an increase.

Only reason would be if 91 is E0 and 87 is E10, which is often the case. Otherwise no difference.

Well, there's also the fact the 4.0 is designed to run 91 for best performance

Best Performance and best mpg aren't the same.

My 2005 owners manual also has a section on How to save Fuel. No mention of using 91 over 87. If Toyota thought it mattered they would have said so there.

Not in Tx. If you find E0 it is 87. Ethanol is used for an octane booster.

There are those that say they get better mileage by X with 91 if that were true I would get around 23-24 MPG with 91 does any one get that mileage with a 4L? No I didn't think so I'll stick with the 87 and be thankful with 20 MPG. The older engine was rated 12 HP more with 91 but not any more. If you gain 12 HP (older claims) with 91 that works out to 1/2 % gain in power is it worth it?

'15 2.7L Auto DCSB, on a road-trip right now. Averaging about 21mpg over my first 700 miles - cruising b/w 75 and 85 most of the time. Pretty hilly on about half the drive so far. Tomorrow's route is flatter, so we'll see.

Hello! Didn't read every page on this thread but thought Id throw in what I experienced with my gas mileage. I have a 2014 trd off-road 4x4 double cab. When I first got this truck I babied the hell out of it driving around town and I was getting an average of 12 to 13 miles a tank of in town driving but 21 on the highway. This drove me crazy but accepeted it as I've never had a 4x4 before. So I stopped babying it and all the sudden I was getting and average of 16 to 17 a gallon driving in town. The only thing I could think was that driving easy and accelerating slowly held the rpm's up for a longer period of time between shifts and instead of helping the mpg's it hurt them. Idk if that's why or not, just my experience

The engine is designed to run 91. It will just retard timing to adjust for 87.

You will see a slight increase in mpg with 91.

When the pump clicks off I can still put another 1.5 gallons in my tank or more. I have been doing this for the last 75,000 miles no lights no nothing by the time you drive 10 miles you have all ready burned at least 1/2 gallon so it's no longer full. Can you explain what these "problems" are? I tow a lot I never use 91 it does not "ping" it however is a 6 spd. and frankly I think a trans shift pattern is part of the reflash. There used to be a section in the manual that said there was a slight increase with 91 over 87 but that is no longer there. For a test one could pull the ECU fuse and see how it runs that should reset the timing to 91 if it does indeed retard the timing because you used 87 and then it will ping or you have that half of a percent more HP power that the 91 should provide.
