I know that in Yosemite and most of the John Muir trail, you can NOT carry any firearms or even bear spray. The latter of those two being the most interesting because it's such an active black bear area.

You could break the norm and carry a taser c-2, x-26 or the new compact pulse. They are not banned anywhere that I know of because no one thinks about them lol. Unlike a stun gun you'd immobilize what you shoot with it, problem is you'd get 30 seconds of immobilization per shot so if it's an animal there's no telling if you'd be able to get away, of you'd scare it off, or what. Plus they are only good from 15-30ft so that's a bit close.

I have never been one to get freaked out by bears or cougars...well, until this last September.

This last elk season I was walking through a very dense part of the forest. When I finally came to an opening in vegetation I was about 20 ft from of a huge black bear. I had snuck up on it. It did a 180 to face me and stand on it's rear legs. My heart was racing...I wasn't sure what to do. After the short pause that felt like forever it ran away from me about 10 ft, looked back, then ran further. I turned and walked away from it at an angle. I didn't turn around, speed up, or slow down. I just kept a normal place and grabbed an arrow for stabbing if needed. I didn't stop walking until I was a mile and a half away from that spot.

I now have bear spray in my hunting gear .

I like the thrill of not carrying a firearm if I'm not actually hunting. The way I look at it, either I'm going to take down a predator with my bushcraft knife, or the predator is going to get me. Either way, it's going to make one hell of a story whether it's me telling it or my next of kin. Not many people get to die doing what they love.

Too many hikers in the Sierra Nevadas. You will eventually get that Gomer who shoots a hiker in dark clothing, swearing he was a bear. Nothing really to do with California's stricter gun laws. I'm not really sure why they don't allow bear mace though. That one is kind of puzzling to me. Maybe it's out of respect for wildlife, LOL

Here I am sitting in front of the computer after literally staying up all night long to try and get my Mt. Whitney exit permit. My plan is to do a 6 day 48 miler from Onion Valley outside of Independence, CA and exit through the Whitney Portal after bagging the summit on day 5. Crossing Kearsarge Pass and Forester Pass (highest point of the PCT). Taking it "easy" doing about 8 miles per day average (10 miles on summit day) but crossing over more than 19,000' elevation gain cumulative.

Permits are available 180 days out but they fill up in the first couple hours after going available online, so I'm sitting here refreshing the page every hour so that August 7 block of 15 exit permits opens up. Getting on the trail is easy, but getting out through the Portal is a huge PITA. Wish me luck, I'm falling asleep sitting up.

Haha glad to see someone has some parallel thoughts. I've done solo backpacking in Colorado, Utah, and California and haven't encountered a bear, mountain lion, moose, elk, rattlesnake, or other potentially dangerous wildlife that was out to get me. Most animals are like humans...you leave them alone and they tend to leave you alone..sometimes it's when you do jackass things like poke a snake that you get bit or get too close to moose/bear that gets you in trouble (ask me how I know). And if a predator is stalking me, I prefer to go like Billy in Predator... awesome movie by the way.

    Hope you get it!

I absolutely hate permitting setups that now are such a crap shoot. I wanted to do the Wonderland Trail but getting a permit for it is hard. Plus you get tons of people submitting multiple requests using friends and families info to try to make sure they get a permit. Its just crazy anymore. Its a hike id love to do but so annoying.

Especially when theres other place i can go with no permit needed and you might see 1 or 2 other people.

As for carrying...i carry pretty much everywhere including while out in the woods. Unlike a lot of people I tend to carry it more for people protection than animals. Animals get scared with loud noises and such. Theres been more stories of people getting mugged or assaulted than of animal attacks by me.

Well, I was up until 7:30am this morning. I refreshed one more time and today's block still hadn't opened up for the August 7 slot. I went to lie down, and my wife woke me at 8:30 and I raced to check and they showed all reserved already! Entry date had enough slots left, but that damn Whitney Portal exit was already filled up. I went back to bed. I just got up an hour ago and refreshed again, and then there were 6 slots open again! WTF???!!! Now, all of the slots on the entry date are gone!!! I'm going to hang myself. Now to make it work, I have to try for an Aug 4-9 slot and wait again on the morning of the 9th for them to open up. At least now I know it doesn't reset overnight so I can be up at 7 and refreshing constantly. I'll get it.

I like your style. I've never had a predator stalk me, they've always ran the other way. 2 black bears in one hike, plus the 2 mountain lions I described earlier. Snakes don't bug me (I'm from AZ and see rattlesnakes just about every time I'm on a trail in the summer or go out to the lakes in the summer nights to catfish).

My wife and I were going. She was a trooper last year and trained for our first section of the JMT. It was 28 miles - the longest hike we've ever done together.

The solitude on the right trails is one of the best parts of these types of hikes. We probably saw about 30 total hikers last year in the 4 days we were on the JMT, which surprised me, but everyone out there was great. The best trail etiquette I've ever seen.

Here's the elevation graph of the hike we're planning. Stats are slightly off from the GPS of the person who recorded this track. Whitney is the tallest one, but it's only actually 14,505'. The stars mark the areas we plan to camp. The first peak on the left is Kearsarge Pass, the second major peak is Forester Pass, and the tallest one is Whitney.

I havent had problems on most hikes with people. Usually the only times i do are on the popular trails where the urban people go out for a walk and just arent really prepared or know any better. But i avoid those trails anyways.

I do like seeing people though. its nice to know whats coming ahead (like o hey the bridge is out lol). But i like a nice quiet, empty place to camp. Just me and the lake or whatever

Only one time in Alaska did I encounter three guys on a trail who stopped and spread out grinning did I feel the need to show I was armed.
They stepped aside and let me pass. That was 1978. Like I said before it is the two legged vermin.

Two legged critters worry me the most as well, been lucky *knock on wood* and have never had an issue. I don't really worry about carrying a gun, I figure it could just as easily be taken away from me and used against me :notsure:

You are right don't carry one if you don't have the training to use it. An old Marine by the name of Col. Jeff Cooper once said don't let your muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy.

I'm fortunate to have grown up hunting year round and from highschool on gone to a range 2 or more times a month. I've met guys who conceal carry who admit that have only practiced with their weapon once or twice. That's scary.
If I can carry I generally will just because I get use to it being there more and you really never know. It's kind of like what we tell people who ask why we have a few men at church who do security....we have fire extinguishers around here too and we don't have fires all the time, just have to plan and train for the worst.
