As a dealer told me, they share a lot of common underpinnings,, so either one would be fine with the V-6 and tow package.

Etrailer has some helpful information as well. I bought my truck to tow, then a little over a year later our family grew and I was forced to start using the SUV lol. I think you'll be fine with whatever option you choose for a newer 4Runner or truck.

Nice, yeah both my dogs border the medium to large scale. I put a retrax tonneau cover on mine very early. If I had gone with a cap, I could still use it with more practicality, that said I would rather the family pets ride in the truck. Once my kid is older it will work fine again, for now the car seat takes up to much room. Oh I also camp a lot and tow a 2014 RPOD camper by Forest River.

Nice! Same. Id rather my dogs ride inside. I cnverted the back seat to a flat surface for the big dog to lay. I also got the tri fold tonneau cover in the box. Just the two of us, so no need for a people rear seat...yet! Lol

I pull an aluminum slant load two horse trailer with my Taco, which is rated for what I do, and has the tow package. Its no problem. Back in the day I pulled 2 horse trailers with 4X4 Hi Luxes. If you take it easy, you can do it. Toyotas are tough.

I pulled a load at 3200 pounds 511 miles with at Tacoma 4 cylinder double cab, from Georgia 2 West Virginia via 20 East 277 north 281 north. Yes you have to anticipate Hills but that's practically with any truck. Ensure your load is safe take your time.

700 pounds is not a lot because your passengers count against that 700 pounds. That's the difference between your dry weight in your Max towing.

Something to look into to make it safer not to wear out your clutch and brakes as much is a brake controller, Sway bars and transmission cooler.

Limit your driving distance as much as possible.

Your thinking of Birtish Columbia we got all the mountains here, it's beautiful ,the rest of the country is flat and boring . You can't put your truck on cruse control and take a nap once you get past B.C.

Ok jumping in, i just purchased a 27ft 4k lb travel trailer, have the tow package on my 08 4x4 double cab , did some bolt on performance upgrades, have the trailer break controller, firestone ride rite airbags. havent towed anything this big before ( towed an 18.5ft starcraft fishing boat previously). im pushing the 5k towing capacity, any thoughts?

I'd say you're ok, just watch the amount of people/pets, gear and water you haul with the load. When the numbers get close, its not that the truck won't do the extra bit - it will. But if you are ever in an accident, there is a legal concept called contributory negligence, that says that even though the actual cause of the accident may not have been your fault, any unsafe conditions that you introduced are considered as contributing to the accident. So when you exceed something, think about if something really bad were to happen, and you ended up in court, how would what you are doing look in the hands of a really sharp lawyer for the other side. Think worst case scenario, and you will get the idea.

    He's got a 5-lug.
His issue is with the springs, brakes, tires, and differential ratio.
Power is NOT an issue. The 4-cyl has plenty of that for the work.

See problem there is that you can't even get your nose all the way up over those mountains to look at the whole country. Saskatchewan and Manitoba ARE flat, but get beyond that and you are into Canadian Shield, which is a heck of a lot more that FLAT... albeit not quite "rocky mountain" bumpy, but certainly not flat like that boring part in the middle.
