Still tracking down a threaded insert that's the right thread. M12 thread inserts are hard to find and the fine pitch is even harder.

 

I'm not sure if these would be practical or not but I used these for a pool ball shifter. Just drill the hole slightly bigger and buy some epoxy. They're pretty common at hardware stores.
Edit: yes I know these aren't the right pitch and all in the picture, it's just a stock google photo lol

 

You might have to look at sites overseas.

 

Yeah I think a coupling nut would be fine, I'll just use some two part epoxy. I'll have a look for one when I go to home depot next time.
