    Hi all,

I'm new here. Wanting to trade in my daily driver 2012 Passat for a 2005 Tacoma DC TRD Off-road with 171,500. I've tried to research mileage on this forum and it seems 171K really isn't much compared to a lot of you. Are there any potential major failures to be concerned with with that many miles (with the understanding that just about anything can fail at just about any time). The CarFax shows very regular maintenance, so it seems pretty well cared for.

    Any input is appreciated.

If the price and maintenance are right, I wouldn't sweat the mileage. But make sure.

Also check for common problems like rusty frame. If the ATX in your name means you're in Austin, there shouldn't be rust issues of the truck is from Texas and has stayed here.

How does $12,998 sound? I know it varies per area, etc. I walked around the outside of the truck, the exterior is clean and in good shape. The inside appeared to be clean as well but the dealer was closed.

As far as the frame rust, I checked the service history. It went in for the frame recall inspection in 2015 at Round Rock Toyota. I don't know if they opted to go with the protective coating but I'm going to call and find out.

As for location, the truck was bought in Nevada and it spent part of its life in Vegas before coming to the north Austin area. I can't imagine it would have experienced the rust.

I just got off the phone with the dealer in regard to the LSC ESD recall. They said they didn't replace anything. Does that mean they opted to apply the "protective coating"?

I've been offered a bit more $ for mine and it has seen better days cosmetically. I'm pushing 173000 miles. I would check for any oil leaking from the timing cover. The gasket failing is a fairly common problem not a cheap fix at a mechanic.
Personally, I would find something newer. Good luck

I don't think NV or TX are categorized as salt states for that recall, nor would I assume a protective coating was applied. Find out for sure on this one because it sounds like members here who got a passing grade were denied any kind of frame recall work later on.

What does KBB say about the price? Used car dealer or Toyota dealer?

KBB says fair purchase price falls between $10,950 and $13,411, so this one falls towards the upper end of that scale. It is a used dealer (Mac Haik Ford) and not a Toyota dealer.

Round Rock Toyota said the LSC ESD recall is complete on the vehicle and nothing was replaced or done to the frame.

Just curious why the trade from a Passat as your daily driver to the Tacoma?

Just to get some more utility, I guess. Have a family and dogs, it would be nice to have the ability to do some light hauling. And the fact that I've always liked the Tacoma in general, and most owners say they're bullet-proof.
