I know that the towing package for the 2016 comes with a trans cooler, 6 pin connecter and hitch, but what else? I have heard its a smaller battery than the second gen towing package and that their might be an oil cooler under the oil filter. However, that may be only for the second gen too...

    Straight from toyotas website:

Class-IV towing receiver hitch, ATF cooler (not available on manual transmission), engine oil cooler, power steering cooler, 130-amp alternator, 4- and 7-pin connector with converter, and Trailer-Sway Control (TSC) (V6 only)

Is the battery smaller in all tacomas, or just ones with towing packages?

From what I have read, the 2nd gen towing package had a 27f battery while the new 2016 has a 24F. I think the 24f has higher output, but not better in cold start. But am well-known to be wrong.

You can only get the tow package on the 6 cylinder.

I'm pretty sure people who bought the 4 cylinder have put recievers on it to tow something light.

I dont know why anyone would get a 2016 4 cyl, because it seems the mpg ratings aren't that much better...

great article, I kind of feel the same way with the Trd-sport compared to the trd off-road. With the off-road, You get so many more features with little effect on price or mpg...
