    ALL engines use some oil.
Depending on the design of the engine, it could be more oil, or less oil.
It doesn't matter if it is today. It doesn't matter if its the 80's. It doesn't matter if its the 40's.
EVERY ENGINE WILL USE SOME OIL.

Not so much a problem with the dipstick, as the tube the dipstick runs in. When you pull out the dipstick, the oil on the dipstick coats the inside of the tube, so when you wipe and reinsert and try to take a second reading, the oil from the tube gets all over the dipstick and makes it impossible to read.

Do what I do, check it first thing in the morning. That way it's all drained in the pan, you just pull it out and look at the level on the stick!

Something else that's in the manual...wait at least 5 minutes before checking the dipstick.

Yep, that does tend to work. Of course, most people like to check their oil while doing an oil change to confirm the level. May not work so well in that instance.

Never liked working on hot engines, hot women yes! Anyway I have two vehicles every other month I'll check the fluids, and tire air pressure when cold. It's easy to do and when I get done I go inside and wash my hands. To me it's a good habit.

My Tacoma is a automatic, I have a 09 Subaru forester to I drive so I go back and forth on both, I don't beat on either vehicles and take the ultimate care if them to. It didn't stay on for long either, so only time will tell.
