I havent found the other one yet...most likely wont but this is the first shed of 2016, Im working on getting my dog to find them but shes still learning. I had her out when I found this one but she didnt key on it till I pointed it out to her LOL.... I also found a couple season old spike deer antler that was chewed up...but it was the first small one like that I found...we also did find an yearling elk killed but nothing of significance...I saw ravens and magpies so I figured why not check it out...it could be something with a rack...but not this time....

Any good tips on shed hunting? Never done it and don’t know anyone that has.

Im still learning, but after December in some places but typically in the spring when snow is gone look where trails cross fences or logs, I have literally walked on/over them on trails people have been on. On the bottom end of slopes, anywhere you would think an antler would get knocked off. In open fields they are easier to spot. Ive found them where there were rubs. The main thing is to go where they go. It also helps to have a good amount of bucks in the area. Its hard for me to gauge how many bucks are around when they travel at least 2 square miles. Thats a lot of ground to cover in the woods. I havent found a lot of them but I just started a couple seasons ago and I dont do it all the time. Ive found a couple moose paddles too. No elk as of yet.

Also lots of people hunt for sheds so you may have them in your area, but unless you get them first you dont know if there were any there before or not.

Cool. I went squirrel hunting this morning and looked some but did not see anything. I’ll see if i can find out when the elk we have on a WMA drop them and go try and find some. come to think of it. i have an elk skull i’ll take a pic of and post. dad was a wildlife officer/ assistant supervisor and they had these elk collared and they went and found it. dad said they think it was struck by lighting, and they cut the antlers off but some lime on it and left it. dad went back a while later and got the skull, I need to fix bottom jaw though.

I got part of the antler that was cut off. I have bottom jaw but it's in 2 pieces. (Split in the middle in the front)

Some gorilla glue would prob fix the bottom jaw. Is that all the piece you have left of the elk antler?

Yeah sadly that all i have. Dad and some other officers cut them off for some reason i don’t remember why. don’t know what they did with it all. Can’t really tell in pix but the rest of the antler i have looks broken off. They think it was struck by lighting and died witch maybe why not sure. I also don’t know where the other side is.

I shot this Ohio whitetail during the 2014 muzzle loading season

After I harvested it, the neighbor sent me two pics from his trail camera:

And the year before, check out that unbroken drop tine
