Yesterday, My dad and I plus a buddy of his and his soon went to Parker, AZ for the BITD Parker 425. Was fun. Definitely brings back memories of racing/pitting there.

Got these mounted today. Super stoked on how they look! Sit on the side just like the rotopax opposite. Also got my cb antenna mount welded on and hoping to get it all wired in tomorrow.

Some pictures. Will get better ones this weekend when I have everything all loaded up.

    Valentines Trip 2016
    2/12/2016-2/14/2016
    Las Vegas-Caliente/Elgin-Logandale/Valley of Fire
Trip Total- 315 total miles, 200ish off road miles, 3 days, 2 nights

With my girlfriend coming into town for Valentines Day and both of us itching to go on another camping trip, I started planning and mapping out another set of trails. We wanted to go for 2 nights and 3 days and just kind of get away and enjoy the time we have together. After getting everything together we needed, we left Friday around noon and made our way out of Vegas towards Caliente. About half way, we took the turn off for Rainbow Canyon (just a dirt road alternate route). We took our time and drove some trails that dead ended in the area. The dirt road ends in the Rainbow Canyon and at the ghost town of Elgin.

From there, it turns to pavement and heads to Caliente Nevada or you drive by the 2 houses in Elgin and head towards Carp and the 15 on Carp Elgin Road. I grew up racing dirt bikes in Caliente and always loved the area and since Im always talking about, the gf wanted to go see it for herself. It was a little out of the way but turned out to be worth going since the canyon you drive through is real pretty and to our surprise, the stream along the road still had quite a bit of water. You cross the stream several times and there was still quite a bit of snow on the backsides of the mountains and still some good patches on or near the road. After playing in the snow and driving through the water, and mooing at some cows, we continued on to Caliente. There we played in more snow, walked around the old train station and got gas. From Caliente, we headed back down Rainbow Canyon to Elgin and took Carp Elgin Road till we found a nice little backroad to camp off of. We got there a little late after trying to find a good spot and finished setting up just before dark. We got dinner going and had an okay meal of pretty pink steaks and potato slices coated in butter. Wasnt the best meal but wasnt the worst. We didnt stay up to late since i worked that morning and burned a few logs before we headed off to bed.

We woke up in the late morning to the sound of the train passing for about the 8th or 9th time since we had set up camp the night before. We made steak and eggs for breakfast and had some cereal before we broke camp and got back on the trail to continue our adventure. From our camp, We went to were I marked Carp (another ghost town) on the gps but turned out to just be a locked gate and the railroad tracks. While walking around the area and looking at the rail road equipment, we heard the train coming so we ran up the hill to watch it go by. After waiting for about 15 minutes and hearing it just over the ridge, we finally went up to the top and saw that it had stopped. It was probably a half a mile long and just stopped. I figured it was waiting for another train to pass since there were two sets of tracks. After waiting for another 30-45 minutes and taking some pictures, we headed back to the truck. Right as we got in the truck, we heard the other train blow its horn and it came around the corner and flew past us and the other train. It was also about half a mile long and took several minutes for it to go by. We waved the other train good bye and eventually took off to head back to Elgin Carp Road. From there, we said hi to some more cows, bottomed the truck out a few times in some big g outs and eventually made it back to the I-15. We made our way the 5 miles down the 15 to the turn off for Logandale Nevada. We drove through Logandale and Overton till we found a place to have lunch and got a scoop of ice cream from a mom and pas shop. We then made out way back to Liston Road and got on the Logandale Trails system. We took our time and enjoyed the monster red sandstone formations till we found our camping spot at the base of one. From there, we could see the pavement that went through Valley of Fire and we where hoping the trail went the rest of the way through and we could drive through the Park and make our way to Lake Mead before heading back home the next day. We got there pretty early in the day and set up camp, made a fire, took our improvised shower to test the new shower set up and started to relax as the sun was setting. After an unexpected lost hiker, we where finally alone. We watched the sun set and made some dinner that consisted of Pulled pork sandwhiches and chips and salsa. Sitting around the camp fire, we talked and enjoyed our time and took some night pictures. We eventually climbed into bed and slept through the night again.

I woke the next morning pretty early and got up and started making breakfast when the gf got up. We had steak and eggs and bacon along with some sausage. We did the dishes and started the 5 mile trek down the un traveled trail and wash. After climbing a few big hills and getting stuck once in the sand(got to use the new treds! Worked really well!). We finally found the right wash to get on the pavement. It was pretty tight and had a few places I wasnt to sure I could make with only have 2wd and the elocker. After dragging the tail end and doing a 90 point turn in a 15 foot area, I finally got out of the tight spot (No pictures of that sadly). The gf did a great job spotting and helping me move the truck around. We where greated at the top of the last sand stone by some dual sporters who applaused us and was amazed we made it with only 2wd drive.

From there, we drove through the giant sand stones and made a quick stop at the infamous Elephant Rock for a picture. We cruised the scenic route around the lake and made it home in one piece. All in all, it was a really fun and great trip. The truck (now named Bertha, I think) and the gf did great. Only problem we had was yesterday when I went to drive the truck and was greeted with a front driver side wheel full of brake fluid (it has happened before). I think at full lock and the suspension fully compressed, the shock hits one of the bolts on the brake caliper and causes it to leak. No biggie though since I just added some more brake fluid and bleeded the brakes and hosed it off. Just means I have to carry some brake fluid though when on trips haha (I should anyways). Cant wait for the next one though!!

I'd vote 4x4 swap. SAS is more for hardcore off-roading IMO. You seem like more the overlanding type. So just do 4x4 swap.

Jealous of your wheeling areas, we got shit compared to you. But I'll be out there sometime :spy:

Man you guys are making this decision hard. My dad's got me convinced to do a solid axle. We can fabricate all our brackets and do it ourselves but it's a little more money. Ifs 4wd swap would be easy as long as I could get all the parts. Would be easiest If I found a doner/wrecked truck either an old toyota pickup for the axle and all the parts or a tacoma. Both have their advantages and to be honest I'm leaning towards the solid axle just due to little to no maintenance and the capabilities of it. I feel I would get quite a bit of use out of it as I want to go to Moab and do the Rubicon and a few other trails. I guess I'll start doing some more research on the SAS and see what parts I need and start searching Craigslist and eBay

Got the passenger scion seat in today. Was a huge pita to do. Involved lots of cutting and grinding to get it to sit level and at the right height. It is comfy though. Only took one picture and it's not very good. I have to mask off the bottom section and paint it tomorrow so I will take pictures then

Finally got it in for the last time. Was a huge PITA but for 60 bucks and a day of my time, it looks pretty good. Have to the plastic off the side one more time so it catches less but the passenger is done and the driver just needs the feet made and all welded together.

    Final Product:
[IMG]2016-02-21_04-43-03 by Harrison M, on Flickr

Before all the cutting and grinding:
[IMG]2016-02-21_04-43-39 by Harrison M, on Flickr

After all the cutting and grinding:
[IMG]2016-02-21_04-43-31 by Harrison M, on Flickr

Pretty hard to see the difference but lowered them about an 1 1/2". Sits about the same height as the stock seats.

On that note, If anyone wants 2 perfectly good stock tacoma seats :spy: Let me know. Has everything except the seat belt recievers.

My gf actually lives in San Diego so I'm always going down there. No tears or rips. The driver side side piece is pretty messed up but is still there. Just wanted a more comfy seat
