I have made a deposit on a new MT OR Tacoma and am quite prepared to wait for it to be built.

I could cut my wait time by accepting a same spec one that is already in the pipeline, but it will have the tonneau.

My sales associate (a friend) did mention that his superiors have informed the staff that Toyota had recently switched to a revised design tonneau from a different supplier. Surprise to me. He further said that he hasn't seen anything in writing, but he'd try to research this. I just ended my conversation with him before posting.

I certainly know better than to trust dealer information without verification, but if Toyota can supply a cover without the dreaded cut-out and doesn't leak, I might be interested.

I must mention that the dealer doesn't care at all if I pick the "pipeline" one or go with the fresh order. It is just a choice I have to make ASAP and am looking for guidance.

I heard the same thing from my parts guy. That a new cover is in the horizon which can be purchased and installed separately. I have been waiting for that.

Got no update from the dealer yesterday, so probably either written confirmation is difficult to find or the info is indeed just a rumor.

It doesn't leak. You need to secure it properly, I have one.

I'm guessing it has more to do with production. The current version you need additional posts installed in the bed. An updated version might remove them and get rid of the post install. This could potentially speed up production since you won't have to have three different beds produced. (Just guessing on all of that).

Short bed is the same with or without the tonneau. The latch pins screw into the bedsides and the plastic rail caps are then cut to go around the posts. The screw holes that the pins mount to are there whether the truck comes with the tonneau or not.

The bed rail cutouts are my main objection to the original design tonneau.

The pictures posted in several other threads convinced me that I'd much rather have a bed cover which leaves no evidence behind when removed.

Toyota dropped the long bed tonneau on my order last fall and I had to pick up something else. They mentioned that it was an issue with the long beds (AC and DCLB only) specifically because of supplier issues.

I am interested to see what falls out from this, so subbed. I can tell you that when properly installed and weather-stripped the Extang SolidFold 2.0 is pressure washer proof. I've tried.

Also, none of the covers are installed on the production line. They are port installed. I just have a problem with cutting the bed rails. With the cover off, it looks like garbage.

    GASP!! Sacrilege.

My Extang is 100% removable in 30 seconds. No cutting, drilling, or any silly shit like that. Details in my build thread.

My comment was strictly for the OEM tri fold cover. I've seen some clean cuts on the bed rails, and some that look like they took a hacksaw too it. I just don't like the look of that. I transport motorcycles with my truck, and I won't have the cover on 100% of the time.

I also don't like how heavy the stock cover is. My guesstimate was 75lbs or so, which makes it cumbersome.

The Extang Solid Fold 2.0 has been on my radar for the last few weeks. I have had my finger on the BIN button for sometime. There are just a few reasons that is keeping me from buying it.

    - I like the way the install is, like you said, no drilling, no modifications. But that also means it is easy to pry open. I have expensive golf clubs that I usually keep in the trunk of my car (and in this case, my bed)
    - The cost is a little high for what you get. But that is subjective. What I feel is high cost may be cheap to others.
    - I keep hearing a newly redesigned OEM cover is around the block.

It's still on my list.. But I feel I should be patient and wait to see what the new OEM cover has to offer.

No sir, it is NOT easy to pry open (and I tried within reason). Once it's locked down, you have to use heavy equipment to completely break it at the bend joints or use a portable rotary saw and try to cut them. The joints are extremely strong, and can't be pried backwards. It is a very tough cover.

It is also around 70 pounds (on my long bed), I would expect it to be lighter on a short bed.

Is the prep for the cover done on the production line, ie the pins and bed cuts made? Asking because I had to order my truck to avoid getting the Toyota cover. I was told by the dealer that was a factory not port option. TRDs (SB) with a Tech package automatically come with the cover in Gulf States.

Yup. This was with mine as well, but they pulled the cover two weeks before actual construction because of the supplier thing.

    Actually glad they did.

It is not. Its installed on the port. The bolt holes for the striker bolts are in every bed already. The port install takes off the plastic rails, bolt down the 6 striker bolts, and cut the bed rails to accommodate.

    Thats good feedback, many thanks!

Dealer near me shows the new cover in his accessories parts list, but not yet available to order. I think a true and new OEM cover is on the way guys!

I noticed this the other day on the southeast toyota build site under accessories. Could have been there for awhile. They also list, what I assume is the "old" tonneau cover for $650.

Hey guys, pardon my ignorance, but what is this "port" you guys talk about where the tonneau gets installed....!! I've heard the same thing with the mudguards also... Where is this "port" and just why are they doing this...??

I have an inquiring mind and need to know this stuff....!!

My truck came with the mudguards in a box on the back seat... (musta missed the port)...??

Well for me the port is Houston, TX. This where any accessories that aren't installed at the factory are added (other than dealer). From my understanding the trucks are railed from the factory in San Antonio to Houston. This is also one of the ports that Toyota's that are still manufactured in Japan arrive. Then from the port, they're dispatched out to the dealers.

    Thanx man...

So all the Tacos from Baja and San Antonio go there first...??

Have things done there and then on to the dealers..??

    Cool.
