To me the stock sound system is pretty decent. The clarity is terrible, but the tones and power are nice enough.

After messing around with the front to back fade, I noticed that the rear speakers sound horrible; on par with a $15 clock radio I'd say. The fronts sound just fine and pretty close to my aftermarket setup in my last car.

My question is: has anyone replaced just the rear speakers and left everything else stock? I bet this would make a huge difference so I might do it either way, just wondering if anyone has experienced it.

Changing speakers alone isn't going to change much if anything at all with sound. Yes, the speakers suck, but it's not so much the speakers as it is the stock head unit.

A couple easy things to do to improve the sound of your truck:

    1. Replace the HU with aftermarket. Stock HU's have filters that only allow so much volume to be passed through within specific distortion limits.
    2. Splice into the wiring behind the stock head unit to add either a Line out converter or something similar to add in an amp and rewire your speaker set up from there.

There are many other options you can go to improve sound quality, but these are the two most common.

Yeah, I've done my own audio on all of my cars so I know a bit about it. I'm aware that changing speakers alone usually doesn't do much if anything, but this has me wondering. The fronts are so decent and the rears are so incredibly bad! Is it possible the HU is sending that distorted, plastic-y sound to the rears? I'm not talking about getting them to sound amazing... I just want them to not make me want to throw up.

Maybe I'll need to just give it a try. If nothing changes at least I'll have the first step to getting a good system.

    Just like the Rock said:

The rears are just for fill. The front is where most of your acoustical sound comes from. You can replace them with a full component set and you'll get better sound, even with a stock radio, it should be noticeable.

If you smell what the rock is cooking... jabroni lol
