Cool thanks, just wanted to make sure the Pro didn't have a different set of leaf springs.

My dilemma is I came up on the front coilovers thru craigslist but can't seem to purchase the rear separately, even thru vendors.

Is the valving that much different on the TRD rear shocks than the bilstein 5160s?

Anyone have any specs to compare the two?

I can live without the TRD branding on the shock if they are relatively close in specs.

The leaf springs will be the same. Both trucks are basically TRD Offroads with the suspension, wheel, exhaust packages added on....amongst other things.

The 5160's are the same thing...minus the trd sticker. This is all from what I've read.

Look at camelback Toyota, they usually have great deals. Hopefully you can find the original TRD kit you want...(PRO/Baja)

Since i have low mileage it's keeping the resale value higher, so i also don't want to start playing around with it. I guess to some they must but for my application, a few dirt roads, some beach sand and pavement I don't need a over-sized lift. Though I wish I could do more off-roading around here, it's just so packed being on an island....I was looking at the in-bumper winch too. I've seen them on here and you really can't even tell it's there. It would be a nice thing to have considering i don't have a locker. (have the LB.)

    Hello all,

Forgive me I know this has been asked multiple times. Just want some feed back from the follow 3 options..

So I just bought my 2012 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off Road Short bed. Looking for a lift. Truly interested in the TRD Pro set up, the Brillstein 5100 and OME 885 springs. Or a Rough Country spacer kit (http://www.roughcountry.com/toyota-suspension-lift-kit-745n2.html)

Here is what I am looking to do:
I want a mild lift up to 2.5 inches (will be happy around 2 inches)
Level the truck front to rear.
I do not want to do a diff drop or change my UCA.
    I also don't want a rough ride.

    Upgrades:
Possible larger wheels and tires (not huge)
A hidden winch mount with an appropriate sized winch. Looking at www.undercoverhwms.com

This is my daily driver, mostly driven on the highway and streets but I plan on doing some mild off-roading. Could I get some opinions on these 3 set ups?

    Other questions:
Add a Leafs (AAL). I don't haul a lot of stuff (maybe a boat in the future).
Do I need an AAL like an ICON Progressive AAL?
Will this make my ride more harsh since I don't haul a lot?
How do I accomplish leveling without AAL?
If I use blocks will my ride suffer?

    Concerning the Brillstein 5100.
If I do just the shocks (no springs) I am getting the impression that I will have limited articulation and possible a rough ride do to setting the shocks at the 1.75 or 2.0 ride height setting. Is this a correct statement?
If I add the springs I should get a better ride and more articulation. Is this correct?

    Thank you in advance.
    Nick

Number 1.....do yourself a favor and absolutely do not do a spacer lift!! Or do blocks in the rear for that matter.

Sounds to me that the TRD Pro lift or BAJA lift sounds perfect for what you want. Plus you can add the specific spring seat spacer that toytec sells to raise the front 1" more.

I have the icon progressive AAL pack. I don't haul anything. I just wanted a beefier AAL than just a single leaf......it ride awesome, I highly recommend it.

If you just do this lift and no AAL, you will be level. This lift gives you a 1.75" lift. With the added spring seat spacer 2.75"

If you did this lift with the spring seat spacer then did the icon progressive AAL without the over load leaf, you should be level at 2.75"...and happy!

Hope I helped you out, anything else don't hesitate to ask.

EDIT.......replacing the spring seat with the one I was referring to isn't like adding a spacer like you may be thinking. I don't want to confuse you. This is a specific spring seat that is only made for the baja and pro coilovers. It adds a small amount of preload but raises it an extra 1" (won't affect the ride). It is not like adding a spacer to the top of the coilovers like the rough country set up.

    Thanks, Juanita.

Couple of questions for you... if I do the spring seat to give me 2.75" will I need to do the UCAs? Also if I do this and I want to keep the rake, how would I accomplish this?

The TRD Pro Suspension can be order at the dealership.. any other suggestions for the cheapest price on them? Also where would one get the best price on the ICON AALs?

    Thanks in advance.

You don't need to do aftermarket UCA's until you hit the 3" mark. I know of a few guys that have added the spring seat spacer and were fine....they had no alignment issues.

If you add the spring seat spacer and add the icon progressive AAL to the rear and LEAVE THE OVERLOAD LEAF ON. ...that should give you the factory rake look.

For best prices on any Toyota parts....look at Camelback Toyota out of Phoenix or look on eBay. I recently saw the PRO kit for just over 1600.
I got my icon progressive aal from Toyteclifts.com

    Zimmmtaco,
Just to confirm this a TRD Pro Suspension lift, with the 1" spring spacer from toytec in the front and the ICONs AAL in the back? This lift gave you about 2.75" of lift? Have you felt the need to upgrade the UCAs? Any Regrets?
    Thanks,
    Nick

How does the toytech spacer effect the shock in terms of it topping out?

The spring seat just adds a little bit of pre load to the spring. The basic cheap spacers that people do go on top of the strut assembly making things potentially unstable. You can install those types of lifts and not do any off roading and probably be fine. Hell I had one a few years back. Now that I know a little more.....I'd stay clear of them.

By lifting the truck via 1" 'spring preload' you are effectively reducing the struts travel by the same amount, from rest to when its topped out. This is because you are simply moving the spring up a given amount lengthening the overall mount to mount lenght of the strut body.

How does is Baja strut affected by reducing the top end of the travel 1"? Is there enough sag in the stock strut to accommodate the reduction in travel before the innards smack the top of the housings?

From how I've been made to understand....yes, you are reducing the amount it would travel. These springs are pretty beefy so it would take quite a bit to completely bottom them out

    Not bottoming out, topping out.

With the strut and spring unladen, you are resting the rod on the rebound bumper. When you lower the truck onto the suspension you compress the strut body so there distance between the rebound bumper and the top of the piston housing/housing (sag). By adding the spring spacer/thicker lower mount, you are "preloading" the spring, which causes less sag and the truck is effectively lifted. This reduction on sag places the piston body and rebound bumper to be located higher in the stroke. When the suspension is unloaded you are then closer to hitting the rebound bumper to the top of the body, topping out.

Was the Baja strut designed with excess sag that allows for the insertion of preload spacers/lower perch without jeprodizing rebound travel to a point that I am going to top out coming off a speedbump?

I see what your saying......was it designed to?....honestly I do not know. What I can say is the people that have installed them have had no problems. This combo has been available for quite some time. I'd imagine you'd hear by know if anyone has had this problem.

    TRD PRO lift, NO SPACER........

I do not see any need for UCA's at this point. Truck handles well on dry pavement and in the snow, and no signs of tire wear after approx 4k miles. I have not re-measured since last fall, to see how much it has settled. Will try to update this weekend if weather cooperates

Truck was designed that way from the factory, UCAs are not required. You only need UCAs if you put in the 1" spacer, as you would get approx. 2.75" lift.

I've double checked with a couple guys that have added the spacer.....I did this because I want to do it and do not want to add uca's if I don't need to. I feel pretty confident with their advice that you do not need uca's when you add the spacer.

2.75" is a fair amount of lift for no UCAs. Could you do it? Sure. Will your alignment numbers be off? Most likely. The right way to do it would be to get UCAs.

Edit: would be interesting if they shared their alignment spec sheet.

I asked them about alignment as well. Specs.....I honestly did not. They had no problems what so ever. I guess I'll see for myself when I do it. :)
