Yakima spare tire mount help!

I installed the Yakima spare tire mount on my bed rail. I was happy with it until I started driving and the tire moved from its original position. It shifted because the top section of the tire does not rest against anything and as I drive it shifts and does not return to its original position.

Has anyone experience this and was able to resolve it?

So it goes from resting flat to tilting? Is that what you are saying? Or is it sliding along the rail horizontally?

I'd imagine you could just anchor the tire with one of the bottom wheel holes over to the rear bed tie down ring to keep it nice and locked in tight. Via a cable or rope or something.

 

Looks like a recipe for disaster if you ask me. Terrible place to mount a spare.

Not sure what is going on with that mount either...

I'd lay flat and strap it down, or upright next to cab so it's not a missile during a collision.

 

Yes it goes from vertical to tilting. And yes, I thought about using the bottom rear bed tie down... I will be looking into that or maybe adding some bars to the mount so it stays vertical.

There was someone on here that had a tire mounted that was or similar method an it caused the bed side to crack due to fatigue and flexing of the bed side.

Yes I did see that post but it was not setup the same way. He used 2 bolts and I am using a plate that spreads the weight across the rail. I just need to ensure that the tire does not move. I have seen others used this method and it does work. I just need to solve this tilting problem.

 

I remember that. If I recall, it was one of MetalMillers. But his was basically a piece of square tube that also stuck out a good 2 inches and had a small base plate.

I probably wouldn't run it attached to my rails either though. Whenever my spare is in my bed its strapped down to L-Track.

 

I thought 285's fit in the factory carrier with little modification, why not carry it there? This looks like a recipe for disaster if you are ever rear ended.

 

If you (OP) are the offending rear ender (it happens), the tire will likely become a projectile.

 

if you look at my tire, it is also tied down by a chain to the bottom strap on the truck bed. I may use a strap, if I decide to keep it there. But I like the points that you are all making. Maybe I, I should just move it to the spare tire mount on the daily drives and on the bed while off road.

 

When I carry my 2nd spare, I simply place it vertically up against the front of the bed (cab) and hold it in place using 2 of the track bed cleats and a ratchet strap. It's never come loose.

 

It's tilting because the whole setup is twisting your rail. There are gaps above and below the rail, behind the mounting plate, from the height of the bed rail. Put some shims behind the plate so that it can't twist.

That plate is designed to sit on a wide flat surface, and the bed rail isn't.

 

Wait, isn't the Yakima Spare Tire Carrier that you linked to for mounting flat on top of a roof rack? That might be your issue.

Also, I wouldn't suggest mounting anything heavy like a wheel and tire to your bed rails, my bedside panels have slight ripples now from mounting too heavy of shit to it.

Yes that is the issue. I need to figure out a solution that levels the plate and distributes the weight of the tire.
