I bought my '03 without checking, but lucked out. The owner had it undercoated under the warranty. I should have known better. It could easily have gone the other way. So, it's covered until 2018. So far the frame is holding up. Not bad for a truck that came from Maine.

2001 Toyota Tacoma SR5 V6 4x4 Extracab purchased from original owner in 9/2015 with 65K miles via used car lot in York PA.
Do you know if the undercoating was performed and paid by Toyota or was owner responsible for getting it done and paying for it?

Just so you know I signed my son up to this website, it's his first vehicle and only has his leaners, but have been posting on his behalf... :)

ive got a 01 tacoma double cab and just looked underneath and saw that right in front of the spring bracket that the rust had just about ate through the whole frame. now i just had this checked about 1 1/2 years ago. so i took it to my local dealer and they looked at it and said they had sent in the request to toyota. i should hear from them in about 2 days is what the guy told me. i was also in there for the spare tire recall. my truck is a 01 with 146,000 miles. right now i cant afford another car payment, i wonder how much i will get for my truck or will they just give me a new frame.

Frames are replaced on '01-'04. Buy backs were for '95-'00 only. I had two buy backs ('97 & '00) and one replacement ('01). Toyota had to approve the second buy back due to their "one to a customer" policy which was then in effect. If they would not have bought the '00 from me, I would have transferred it my sister, and she would have taken it in.

Let us know what they are going to do for you. I still have my '03, and am under warranty until 2018, so I am interested in the outcome. It seems to be taking Toyota longer to deliver the frames now then it did when mine was done about four years ago. They had my frame and related parts in about a week, and the work was done about a week after that.

Hi guys- Anyone have a link to "official" Toyota info about this frame rust issue?
(I've read the entire thread, but did not see such a link ... may have missed it).

    Three related questions:
    1. Does the warranty cover the bed/body or just the frame proper?
    2. As a Colorado vehicle (original owner) I've received no info from Toyota about this issue, but did recently received the spare tire carrier inspection notice and had that done (passed).
    3. Yesterday I found a 1"x4" rust bubble in the bed, right where the bed support meets the frame over the rear axle. The inside of the bed is protected by a topper. Looks like the rust has propagated from below. Anyone else experienced this?

    Stats if helpful:
    2003, 4x4, V6, manual, 110k miles

    Thanks.

My relative just bought a 2001 tacoma with 83,000mi today. They said the frame passed inspection and is strong. If she has future problems, it will be replaced?

The warranty is only for 15 years from the original in service date. The dealer can tell you that, or you can register the vehicle on the Toyota website and see it yourself, along with all the dealer service records. At best, you would have about a year left on the warranty.

I was not able to find any specific info on the web site last time I looked. I don't have the official notification from Toyota for my truck because I bought it from a dealer out of state, and it came without paperwork other than the title. I sent what paperwork I had on my '01 off with the new owner (who got a very good deal on an essentially "new" truck)

As far as I know, we're only talking rusty frames. I don't know if CO was considered a cold climate state by Toyota - seems like it should be. These were states which used road salt in winter conditions. A dealer should be able to tell you, or maybe someone here that may have that info.

So does all this apply only to the 20 states previously listed? And what about those states, purchased there, truck had to be registered there and if so for how long? What about beach cities. The salty air causes problems as well.

I think the previous owner would have had to have the undercoating sprayed on when they offered it many years back. That then extends the warranty for rust for 15 years past purchase date? Maybe? It would really help if you had the paperwork to prove the spray was completed. I can't remember off the top of my head. I'd have to try to find my paperwork.

I know for my truck the rust warranty was extended to June 2016. Truck was purchased June 2001.

I was not the original owner of any of my tacomas, and they all have been covered. Since the warranty requirements for service were provided and paid for by Toyota, Toyota has all the vehicle specific service records (by VIN number). Your dealer can check your VIN, or you can register your vehicle on the Toyota Owners website. Once in, you can view the service records for the dealer provided service on the vehicle.

And yes, the vehicle had to have the corrosion prevention treatment applied by a dealer before the deadline for the state in which it was registered at the time. Whoever owned it then must have followed through with this. That record, if it was done, will be on the website.

On the site it states that Tacoma was inspected for perforation in 2010. Do you think dealerships sprayed all the vehicles inspected?

Damn. All mine says is it was inspected. It has a lot of rubbery stuff under it but doesn't say it was done by them.

I just purchased my truck Jan 2nd (2003 dbl cab), and took it to a dealer. they said there is no warranty on any frames (1st gen) anymore. mine was coated back in 2011 by a dealer so do I actually have a warranty on the frame? didn't trust the dealer I first took it to so I visited another and they said that if Toyota coated the frame, that was as far as its going to go as far as warranty. the first dealer really didn't give me a straight answer on the 15-year warranty so where are you guys getting that info from?
