Why do tne full size domestic V8 trucks get over 20. Mid size v6 should be able to hit 25 easy you would think.

Lighter, and cheaper does not equal better MPG. Maybe that was the case in 1990. You gotta pay up for getting better fuel efficiency today. You pay for it in a full-size. That is why a 5.3 Silverado gets almost the same mileage as your 3.5 Tacoma that has way less power. Every automaker could make an aluminum mid-size gas V6 that gets better than 30 mpg highway, but that tech goes to the full size, more profitable trucks first. Then later trickles down to mid-size trucks. Kind of high luxury cars gets new tech that later trickles to other models.

My 4x4 OR got about 18.5 mpg on my road trip this past weekend, but I did a lot of driving through snow so it wasn't a constant speed. Just my commute back and forth to work averages about 16.5mpg-17mpg, and that's kind of a mix of stop and go and highway cruising. Maybe it will get better as it breaks in, but it's definitely a thirsty bitch.

This "state of the art" you mention is 11 years old, but as the TFL guys showed, the Tundra and the much less powerful-Tacoma get roughly the same MPG when towing a 5600 lb trailer.

If I lived 1.8 miles from work, I'd just run to work. It would take me 15 mins to run or I ride my bike...oh wait I do live 2 miles from my work, so I just run or ride my bike to work most days.

As compared to ford, chevy and dodge full size you would figure that toyota could be the leader in the mpg catigory.

Everyone in this thread comparing their gas to their 1st and 2nd gens back in 90's to mid and late 00's need to consider the ethanol.

MPG's go down as the % of ETHANOL/gallon goes up..."Up to 10% ethanol" is typical and 10% can result in an almost-equal % worse mileage.

Hard to compare gas from station to station and year to year especially when the exact percentage isn't a given. Different companies and states do things their own ways to meet the ethanol gallon quotas. Those quotas have risen substantially in the 2nd gen's lifetime.

Make your arguments after running zero-ethanol gas in each.

Not sure how to copy/paste this ethanol in US gas timeline. Google:

What?! Is that on the back of a tow truck or something?
    I've been averaging 17.1...mostly 40-50mph flat backroads.

That was with the cruise set to 60 on a flat road. My first extended road trip without towing anything.

Offensive stickers and stuff the wife doesn't know about.
I'm still seeing 15-16mpg, with a lot of highway and our back country roads. Gonna address it when I bring her in for her 5k service on Tuesday. I'm not expecting anything amazing but with many of yall getting much better I'm wondering what I am doing wrong, I have really been doing everything I can to get better mileage, keeping it in low rpm range, 50-60mph ranges, 2wd, have tonneau cover, not using the funky cruise control which pops it to 3500rpm for no apparent reason what so ever. So we will see...

Let's see that as a tank average. Anyone can get those numbers on a short straight shot trip by just hitting update.
