Go redo your w4. There is a line for additional withheld. Line 5 or 6 if I remember right.

The wife's niece is 34. She has worked a grand total of 4 months in her entire life. That was 9 years ago. She has 3 kids by 3 different fathers who NONE of them pay a flippin' dime towards the kids. She get's state aid, and some sort of federal grant money to watch her own kids..... At a family get together yesterday, I was informed the "Jenn" will be "getting back" over $11,000 on her taxes...... SHE DIDN'T PAY A FREEKIN PENNY!

OBTW, I OWE a little over $2K in addition to what has already been paid.

    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

we're essentially screwed over because we have no children despite maxing out retirement savings and such. married couple, 0 kids, late 20's, pulling roughly $90k combined/yr.

Just my 2 cents.... I also shoot for 0 refund because i am replubican and detest our govt.

At the beginning if the year I use a tax estimator calculator and figure where I need to be to make it to the 15% tax bracket. Wife and I make close to 100k. Last year it took 200 a week to my 401k and 50 a week to my hsa account (health savings) to get close to even. Paying yourself tax free money is the best possible way to lower your adjusted gross income dollar for dollar.

Now with the baby on the way I need to go back and figure it back out.

The old adage "not preparing, is preparing to fail" goes a long way with taxes. Take a couple of hours and educate yourselfs.

I understand your pain. My wife is a school teacher in a poor district. Every damn day kids bring in iPad, iPhone, and such to school. Mom shows up to pickup little whatever to hell there name is in bmws, lexus, and lincolns. They are all on free lunch (that gets go thrown away for the snack and soda machine) and whatever other free program they can find. Few of the kids have any form of discipline and when my wife wants to do discipline a child the damn parents won't answer the phone. I'm sick of this shit.

People even fake divorces to get there kids free health care. While we bust our ass working to pay for that shit.

Sadly we need a way to separate helping the needy and helping the ones who take advantage.

One thing I miss very much about Europe.. very little class separation. 90% of Europeans are middle class. Very small portion is upper class, maybe 2%. Small amount of lower class and very few are on welfare. You see very few beggars on the streets.

I've also heard that from some people from the UK that I work with. We often chat (respectfully) about European vs. American society, taxes, politics, etc. He's been working in the US for several years now and he indicated that his overall tax burden here in the US is higher than in the UK and he gets less in return (aka healthcare, education, etc). And he's also said he and his family have never had to wait for any type of health related procedure/surgery when they were back home. Now I'm not advocating for any Europen/Socialist type policies...but definitely makes for interesting thinking & discussion.

Still on topic as its tax related. ;)

From my experience of living in Germany for 7 years and having many assignments into England, Spain and Italy, I'd say the European health care system is very similar to ours and their educational programs are better. I'm a very patriotic man and I spent 23 years serving for a variety of reasons, one of the main ones was my love of country. But the direction this country has taken over the last decade or so, I"m not ruling out spending my retirement years in the south of Spain, Italy, or Switzerland.

I know exactly how you feel...my sister in law is the same exact way...and my own sister isn't much better....really pisses a man off...and then on top of it every time they see you it's "why don't you give me some money", "I need a sugar daddy". This world would be alot better place without them.

You guys have been busy while I've been asleep obviously! My take on all this. We are no ponger a first world country, by any stretch of the imagination. With all of the current policies, laws, job pool (lack thereof) and what have you, we are quickly approaching, if not already at third world country statistics.

We can sit here and point fingers all day at what and who is causing all of this to happen, but the real reason is in the bigger picture as a whole and is a multitude of issues currently going on, which the politicians refuse to address out of self interest and their own money hungry driven agendas.

BTW, those people on all those free programs and on that sugar daddy hype. They are a huge part of the problem, playing the system like that. I hate those kind of people. Those are the kind that end up all alone when they are old because they have no one left to try to milk.

Claimed zero for taxes. I typically get around $1500-2k back every year. My income fluctuates too much to try and play the numbers game to even it out. One year I'll make $60k, another I'll make $90k, all depends on the OT. I haven't been home yet to file as my W2 arrived while out of town for work. This year's should be fairly hefty return.

Edit: Not married, no kids, no house, early 30's, max contribution to 401k and fulling funding a Roth IRA.

Holy fucking cow. Your wife's niece might be my Section A renter in Seattle!

I lost my job in Seattle 9 years ago and refused to take any handouts from anybody. So I picked up, with my family, and left Seattle for a great position in NY.

I couldn't sell my house in Seattle, so I had to rent it out. It's a five bedroom/three car garage and with the recession in full bore, no decent hard working type could really afford the rent. Except for Section 8 renters, who's rent is mostly paid for by the govt. AND this person is constantly late with her $200 portion. She has numerous kids and claims to be unmarried.

In the meantime, in NY, we live in a three bedroom house with a small two car garage.

You need to get your wife to yell at her niece to pay her portion of her rent on time. Maybe that $11K tax refund will help get my rent on time.
