I've had a few different ones over the years. My phone is the best so far.

I have Garmins. Have had the same since early handhelds. You can even download shared rout-able maps for free if you check online rather than buy. I load two sets on mine, City Navigator and 24,k Topo as it gives great terrain detail and covers backroads. In addition there are map overlays of many of the off road locations and trail maps you can load in as well, or even make your own, by taking a pdf file or jpg and loading into google earth and overlay the view. Then save in a kmz file and load into Custom maps.

So I guess what I am saying, is when you pick a unit, look to the aftermarket support groups first, just like here. Check out the support and issues. My friends also have a few Magellan units.

Currently I have and use all the time a Garmin 64st and 62st. I like being able to use AA rechargeable batteries

Hey thanks for your replies, Back roads and OHV trails would be the primary application. It seems like my head unit constantly tries to send me off cliffs and in circles whIle my phone is only as good as reception. I have been looking at the Oregon series of hand held GPS units.

The Oregon is a good unit, touch screen, and lots of room for maps on an external 64GB chip that you add. Get the most detailed topo map and learn to utilize the free maps. I had one, for about two months but lost it while going 60 mph across the desert in a buggy rig.

I use the Nav system in my Taco because it's convenient and doesn't use data. HOWEVER. In my experience, nothing beats Google Maps.

We use a Bad Elf Fob connected to the iPad mini that managed the vehicles ODB, Nav and entertainment. It works all over the world and when combined with the proper app, it's an incredibly powerful tool. Versatile, useful and flexible. For example, the copilot can link to it with our Macbook pro and edit video or pictures with the location or do any task that requires GPS datum while I track my location and course with the iPad and My iPhone as a backup. All while tracking vehicle ODB information, live weather, music or podcast. all linked and updated simultaneously. The trucks dash is clean and neat, all you see is the iPad, neatly below the radio. It replaces a bunch of devices. When we get to our destination, we remove it from its mount, (no wire to unplug) and use it to read books or watch TV.

Thank you, Maybe this can help show what I'm talking about. I truly don't understand why anyone would still install a clunky GPS or SCAN GAUGE in 2016. There are much better options out there. That is unless, there is a legitimate reason for using one of those old school devises, battery life for example.

I prefer phone and then factory as an alternate. Waze is what I like to use- reports police sightings, find gas prices, reports objects on road and other little things that's useful. It's all user reportings- so information is fairly updated.

Garmin rhino 655t with the huntmaps chip added. It shows everything including property boundaries and land owners. Definitely worth the money.

Samsung 8 inch Tab A with DeLorme (Garmin) original InReach for GPS signal with GAIA GPS maps as well as Earthmate (Garmin) app. For pavement to get to the trails, I download Yahoo maps to my phone and tablet because they are easy and don't take a ton of storage.

Google maps on an iPhone 7 is all i use. You can download your desired locations to work offline. You do not need cell service to use your GPS.

I am using a Galaxy tab 3, gps works without cell or WiFi if you load the app /maps of your choice ahead of time.
I’m still looking for the best app, I forget what it’s called but the map detail is great just cumbersome to use on the fly for navigation, I use my iPhone for DD.
