My ultra cheap food is french onion soup:
    -onion
    -water
    -beef boullion cubes
    -thyme

Literally can make a two gallon pot for less that $5... Optionally crusty bread and cheese to go in it and with it. Takes a long time to sautee off all the onions but worth it.

Another low cost dish is risotto, it can be made fancy and expensive but it also can be made cheap and usually there is quite a bit of it and it can be eaten for several days. To save money use a little wine vinegar instead of actual wine but never skimp on the Parmesan cheese use the real stuff and the cheese is the most expensive ingredient. You can make risotto with any meat or meatless you can add any vegetables you want. Like my french onion soup suggestion above it is time consuming to make a risotto but worth it.

Bagged 15 Bean soup mix made with 1 pound mild and 1 pound hot Italian sausage,, double the amount of diced tomatoes, a splash of lemon juice, minced garlic, 1 chopped onion, let simmer for several hours, YUM!
Makes enough for a week or more, and it gets better as it mellows over time.

I will skimp on just about everything else but my food.

Dare I say it, the Taco mods can wait one more month.

This is my cheap meal too. Do it in crock pot so it's easy too. Family loves it, kids call it Mean Bean Soup.

That's one of those things that's really good after having to work outside in the cold weather! Hearty and really seems to warm you up!

Fry bacon then roll chicken liver in flower (and spices) and fry the chicken liver in the bacon grease. Build a pot of rice.
