Ok I did get the crank and cam gears off finally, but had to pull the timing cover back plate to replace the oil seals. On the back of the metal back plate I removed there was some type of spongy sealant used around the cam seals, crank seal, and other openings to keep dirt and oil out of the timing belt area. The old sealant was coming off so I removed it. Just curious if anybody else has run into this and what they may have used to insulate/reseal these openings.
The sealant was spongy but not intended to stick to the block only the back of the back plate. So I am thinking some RTV isn't the best option.
