Hey guys, I'm new to the forum and I just have a question. I have 2016 SR5 4Cylinder and my MPG is terrible. I'm getting 18 MPG average and it's mostly Highway miles. I end up spending $45 every 5 days just on gas. The Max I've ever got was 21 MPG and that was on my way home from the dealer when I first got it. I currently have 1.4K miles and I've never gotten to 20MPG ever since.

    Welcome to truck ownership.

    2.7 doesn't like high RPMs.

Drive under 2k RPM on the freeway. Accelerate gradually.

There's 100 other factors that I'm not going to bother with.

Point is - drive slow, and get used to owning a truck. MPG isn't a Tacoma strong point, particularly if you're winding out an underpowered motor to get around.

As you see a truck makes a poor commuter car. Shouldn't be too much of a surprise.

    PS
Your window sticker lied to you.

Does traffic play a big factor on this? I live in Hawaii and traffic is terrible. I usually am under 3k RPMs. I travel 80 miles daily and usually stuck in traffic for a good hour and a half.

Traffic always has a part in fuel economy.

Your engine is running regardless if you're moving or not, and stop and go and stop and go is horrible for mileage.

Your not experiencing anything unusual. Except possibly buying the wrong vehicle.

But like mentioned before, Tacoma's have never been known for great gas mileage and its a truck so 18 mpg is pretty good in my books.

And here I am thinking it's great! Lol. I averaged 13.7 MPG in my Tundra (5.7L) on any given day. Maybe 15-16 highway. Though it would at least stay in 6th gear the whole time :boink:

So far my Tacoma (3.5L) is averaging about 18 even combined. Not too bad. 15-16 with ECT on and actually driving like I want to. And as high as 24 if I'm going around 55-60 with no stoplights out in the country.

Here was my drive home tonight. About 7 miles at 65-70 and 40 the rest of the way. So it is possible. But it's usually 18 as stated. My tank average is at 18.2 and I'm at about a quarter tank. Hand calculations usually agree with it at the pump.

    image.jpg

For reference. The tank average of the rental car I had for the last two weeks while my Tacoma was in the body shop was 32.3 MPG. It was a 2015 base 2.4L 4cyl Hyundai Sonata. And I felt like I was going to get run over every time I drove it.

Are you in a cold weather climate? I hear summer blend gas is more efficient than winter blends.

Good ol' Hawaii, gets pretty dang cold over there. It's probably killing your milage as all the fluids have to warm up from sub zero temperatures.

Really though, the traffic is going to kill it. While you are actually driving down the road at a reasonable rate I'll bet your milage is actually pretty good. But when you are stopped the number will go down for every minute you aren't moving while still burning gas. I have a short drive to work (8 miles) and I can get anywhere from 14 MPG to 20 MPG simply based on if I hit both highway lights or not and how hard I floor it to merge depending on traffic. Kind of funny to watch. Same route both ways.

No significant gain in MPGs from "break in"...this is a myth, an urban legend at best. If anything the perceived "improvement" is due to driver style changing or adapting to the vehicle. Fuelly Numbers do not lie. Most of the 3.5L Tacoma's are getting under 19 MPG averages and the majority of those are 4x2 trucks not 4x4 as more 4x2s are sold than 4x4.

Yeah I would say what smitty is true I would also include the tranny learning driving style as well. I am trying to get my mileage issues worked out right now, was just in the shop yesterday for my 5k service and they said everything was "in range" aka not gonna bother really trying to figure anything out. I am getting an avg of 15-16mpg to the tank which strikes me as kinda low to be honest with what I am seeing most other peoples. I do a lot of highway and back country roads, not much traffic at all. They reset the TCU so it's relearning right now, so I am absolutely nursing the shit outta her right now even though I feel like I did when I first got her. As for Hawaii when I was at Hickam we lived in Ewa Beach and my normal commute was 2hrs each way if I was working days, don't miss the islands one bit to be honest, I'm more of a cold wx person/4 seasons person, I like my Christmases to be cold.
