Two things have to happen to fit the panel back,

    1. There is a piece of Styrofoam attached to the door trim panel that needs to be shaved down. Here it is pictured.
    DSC02817_83941adf80ec6de8cabe9984489d310d78ba17d1.jpg

And second, the MLV needs to be trimmed proper so that it fits inside the door trim panel completely, AND in no way interferes with the plastic clips also pictured above.

As soon as I finish the drivers side door, and maybe the back wall, I'll follow your example and do the roof. I'll probably just do the Frost King there though, and maybe a little mat. Thanks for your detailed writeup on removing the headliner (best I've seen) :)

    Thank you very much.

Here is another link that I think does a great job explaining as well.

Also somewhat related as it's tire tech... My kids enjoy pulling the little rubber whiskers off the tires, at least before a few trips through the rocks shaved them off... I looked into what they were called.

    They are called "vent spews".

I've still got my TRD OR Spare wheel under the truck. Once I can find a matching 4runner limited wheel at reasonable cost, that one will go up for sale... I'll keep you posted though and in the man time, Criagslist is your friend :D

    Thanks.

Is there a specific model year for those 4runner rims that you used Crom?

How did you sell your stockers so fast? I've had mine up for sale here and on Craigs since December and no bites. Just a bunch of "What size are they?" "Do you think they would fit my car?"

Thank for the compliment on the write up. I've never really done one, but like I said in the post, I get caught up working and forget to take pictures. Usually all I end up with is a before and an after with nothing in between. Removing the headliner is pretty straightforward. All you'll need is a 10 mm wrench and a Phillips screwdriver and lots of patience. If you get stuck, feel free to reach out and I'll try and help in any way that I can.

I'm not sure of the exact year range, but I want to say that the 4Runner Limited wheels were sold between 1998-2002. The ones I got came off a 2001 4Runner.

You're welcome. Was it easy / hard to pull the whole head liner out of the truck? If you pulled it out, which door did you pull from and did you have to fold it through? Just wondering. Thanks!!!

I guess I got lucky on the sale of the wheels. There where other wheels in my market for sale, but I was the lowest at $200 firm.

Here is a copy of the ad I ran: (also posted 3 pics of wheels)

I actually didn't remove the headliner out of the truck completely. I would have had to fold it to get it out and I was concerned with leaving creases or otherwise damaging it somehow. The easiest way I found to get to the roof was to drop the headliner and prop it up at an angle away from the side I was working on at that time. Hope that makes sense. I had my rear seats folded flat and my front seat folded and I slid them as far forward as I could. I also removed all 4 headrests. In hindsight, it may have been easier to remove the seats completely, but I was working in a tight spot in my driveway. Doing it this way, I was able to line the driver's side and the move over to the passenger's side and prop the headliner in the other direction to repeat the process. I didn't have trouble reaching any spots on the headliner, but I do have monkey arms. Other posts I've seen the remove the interior completely, but they are also adding sound deadening to the floor and whatnot.

There were a few times that I did lean against the unsupported headliner more that I should have and bent it a bit. But as far as I can tell I didn't leave any permanent damage. I'll take a closer look today. I know I need to clean it a bit because I got some of the adhesive on my fingers and left smudges. A few spots cleaned up easily with simple green and rag (I keep these in my car at all times).

I pulled the headliner completely out of my old first gen crew cab to self install a sun roof. Not quite the same, but I'd think with a larger back seat and back door, the second gen would be easier. I slid the driver seat all the way forward and reclined it as low as it would go without the head rest. I had to bend it a little but not enough to show a crease. I haven't tried removing the back window (I've heard that it is VERY difficult), but that would allow the headliner to come right out.

Love the repurposing of the 4Runner wheels by the way.

Speaking of headliners, they typically go in through the windshield opening before the glass is put in at the factory.

But one night i got to watch some workers forget and they folded the headliner in half to put it in a truck (not toyota)

@Crom, take the time to do the roof. I did and really appreciate the benefit as it really made a difference. Cut those harmonic vibrations down considerably.

I have to tell you all a very stupid story about an "unintended mod" that happened to my truck.

I take one of my kids to school each day and pick them both up after work. One day my oldest daughter almost 5.5 now, gets in the truck and we're driving to get the other kid and I smell this watermelon smell. It's real strong, and I'm like what the heck is that?!? She said, "I dropped a pencil Dad". MMMM okay. But what does that pencil have to do with that smell?

It turns out it was a Smencil .

What the f*** is a Smencil you ask? Why they are scented pencils of course! :D

I am usually always pressed for time and I kept forgetting to find that thing... So finally after 3-4 days I located the loose smencil in the back of the truck. During that time, I got to enjoy the strongest watermelon smell in my life.

    • 5 Original Smencils - Gourmet scented pencils
    • Made from 100% recycled newspapers. HB#2 graphite writing cores

    • Scent guaranteed to last for 2 years
    • Each Smencil comes in its own biodegradable plastic freshness tube

Who the hell thinks up these things?!? :D

    ROFL :D

Remember bubble gum cigarettes? I do. Now that's a gateway drug!

I saw in your build you used some material from https://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com/ <---Great site by the way. I learned a lot there. What material did you use for the roof?

My plan is to use some damper to alter resonance, then cover everything with the frost king. In a perfect world I'd use MLV, but I'm thinking no way in hell that it can be supported and not cave the headliner in.

I used the CLD tiles followed up with the a glued together sandwich of his foam and the MLV. I too was worried about the weight but with it spread out evenly it was fine. I did put some of his velcro tabs onto the foam and then to the sheet metal to keep the whole works from shifting around and I imagine that they help hold the material up a little bit. I really was - and still am - impressed at how effective it works.

NOTE: If you are using the glue that he offers - or similar - put your foam and MLV sections together in the evening and let them sit overnight in a well ventilated area as that stuff really does stink. I didn't do that and gave myself a bit of a headache for a couple of days until the odor dissipated. Luckily for me it was spring time so I got to drive with the windows down as well as park it in the garage with the windows down at night time.

@Crom with all your product testing and stuff any recommendations on batteries for our trucks? I had a Diehard 31M and the Pelfreybilt Battery tray. But my Diehard may be bad its been sitting a year now and the trickle chargers and battery conditioner hasnt brought it back yet...

Yes. I like the walmart Everstart MAXX line. I have three of them in service right now, and they work great. About $100, made by Johnson Controls.

Just make sure for a starting battery, buy a starting battery. For trailer, or auxiliary accessories, buy a deep cycle battery. Internally the battery construction is different.
