I just bought a used 2015 TRD Off Road pkg Tacoma (16K miles). I was very surprised to learn that the Tacoma doesn't have automatic headlights where you simply twist the stalk to Auto and never have to remember to turn on or off your headlights again. I own 3 other older vehicles that have automatic lights. I think I have the tech package (Nav, entune, bluetooth, etc). Am I missing something? If not, does anyone know if an automatic headlight (and rear lights of course) kit is available for the Tacoma? Hopefully there's a spot to simply plug in a day-night sensor.

I just twist the stalk when I notice it's dark outside. Seems easier than retrofitting a bunch of electronics. But that's just me.

Right, but on well-lit streets it's easy to forget, especially since I've not had to worry about turning on and off headlights when driving for the past 5 years.
I bet Toyota has it, but maybe just doesn't mark it as automatic?

    2015 doesn't. .. lol!

But seriously, the OP is right. I have a poverty spec Nissan Altima and it has auto lights, so why not a $30 k truck???

Sub'd for anyone who knows of a retrofit kit.

Edit: Welcome to TW OP! You'll get used to the snark here. It's actually pretty entertaining. Most of the time. :)

Just leave them on all the time :notsure:

They turn off after a minute or two of locking the doors

Thanks, mrkabc. I think I will try Sacrifice's suggestion to leave on and see if they just go off after a certain time. 2 mins would be too long. Or I may just read the manual!! My son is reading it because the truck will be his in 6 months.

my base model goes off as soon as you turn key off.
i always shut them off anyway, just in case they have a parasitic drain on the battery.

To do this you need the light sensor that installs onto the dash on top; when it's dark it sends a signal to a relay that flicks the lights on, it's actually quite simple but would require too much work to make it all work to justify it at all.

Your stuck with just flicking on the light unless your ready to tackle the job. You could get everything from a junk yard from a vehicle that has it, forsay a camry and retrofit it all to work.

    From the owners manual:
    Automatic light off system
Opening the driver’s door with the engine switch in the ACC or LOCK position
will turn the headlights and tail lights off. To turn the lights on again, turn the engine switch to the ON position, or turn
the headlight switch off once and then back to the or position.

Aware of that, but that's lame and not a real auto headlight system.

Still hoping someone had found a mod kit to do this. Ford had one for 2005 Mustangs, was an easy retrofit, hard to believe Toyota doesn't make one?

I checked and headlight switch can remain in on position. When I turn off the key they stay on, but as soon as the driver door opens they shut off. Good enough for me. There must not be a sensor because the lights come on in the daytime.
